Can YOU say leucistic?

This summer we had two unusual visitors come through: a cuckoo with leucism and a bluebird with albinism. Both are uncommon genetic conditions, and seeing them side by side gave our team a great opportunity to talk about how they differ!

We see Canada Geese all the time, but have you ever really looked at their feathers? Plumage can tell us more than you might think. Subtle differences in their feathers can provide clues about a goose’s age, health, and even its social status within the flock. To us, they may all look pretty similar, but to another goose, those details can tell an important story.

Ball Pythons may be small compared to some of their python relatives, such as the Reticulated Python, but they have some amazing adaptations to make up for it!

Native to West and Central Africa, these nonvenomous snakes are excellent nocturnal ambush predators. They have heat-sensing pits along their mouths that help them detect the body heat of nearby prey, basically having a built-in thermal camera.

And talk about a sleepy snake, Ball Pythons can sleep for 20 to 23 hours a day. If you’re looking for a pet that really understands the importance of a good nap, the Ball Python just might be what you are looking for. Trumpeter Swans may be hard to miss today, with wingspans reaching up to 8 feet and weighing as much as 30 pounds. But did you know that these birds were almost not with us?

By the 1930s, fewer than 100 Trumpeter Swans remained south of Canada after years of hunting and habitat loss. Protection from hunting helped their numbers begin to recover, and conservationists later reintroduced Trumpeter Swans to areas where they had disappeared. These efforts helped bring the species back to parts of their former range and turned the Trumpeter Swan into an inspiring conservation success story.

Did you know Whooper Swans are one of the largest flying birds in the world? These beautiful swans can weigh up to 22 pounds and have a wingspan of up to 8 feet. Their name comes from their distinctive “whoop-whoop” call, and they can be recognized by their mostly black bill with a yellow patch at the base.

Native to Europe and Asia, Whooper Swans are uncommon in North America, although some do migrate to Alaska and a few have been spotted farther south.

Here at CWR, we have a Whooper Swan, appropriately named Whoop Whoop! He was found abandoned on a frozen Missouri pond, not long after losing his mate when she was hit by a car while searching for food.

Things have changed for Whoop Whoop, today, he is enjoying his happily ever after at CWR.

The name "goose" is used to describe the Egyptian Goose, as it comes from their goose-like appearance and behavior. Egyptian Geese are waterfowl with long necks, upright postures, and strong family bonds, all traits that are similar to true geese.

Even though they are more closely related to ducks, Egyptian Geese are unique in their own way. They are known for their beautiful markings, loud calls, and devoted parenting.

Egyptian Geese have a long history with humans. In ancient Egypt, these birds were considered sacred. Their connection to ancient civilizations is one reason these beautiful birds continue to capture our attention today.

"Bantam" simply means a chicken that is much smaller than the standard size. Some breeds, like the Sebright and Japanese Bantam, exist only in bantam form, while many popular breeds also have bantam versions, including Cochins, Silkies, Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Wyandottes, Orpingtons, and Old English Game chickens.

Even though they're small, bantams are full of personality and confidence. They are excellent foragers, devoted mothers, and always seem to think they're the biggest bird in the flock!

Purple Martins are incredible aerial insect hunters that spend most of their day catching food while flying. Their menu includes flies, beetles, dragonflies, moths, wasps, winged ants, and other flying insects. They can catch hundreds of insects each day, making them an important part of a healthy ecosystem. While many people believe Purple Martins survive mainly on mosquitoes, mosquitoes actually make up only a very small part of their diet because those insects usually fly lower than where martins do most of their hunting.

Ever notice a line of white gourds hanging high in someone's yard or at a park? Those are Purple Martin homes. Across much of the eastern United States, Purple Martins rely almost entirely on people to provide nesting housing, and those gourd racks help give these amazing birds a safe place to raise their families.

Aquatic turtles are built for life in the water. Their webbed feet help them swim with ease, while their streamlined shells reduce drag as they glide through ponds, lakes, and rivers. Many species can stay underwater for surprisingly long periods by slowing their heart rate and conserving oxygen while they rest. Some can even absorb small amounts of oxygen through specialized tissues, helping them remain submerged even longer. These incredible adaptations make aquatic turtles well suited for life below the surface.

Have you ever wondered why a slider is called a "slider"? When basking on logs or rocks, these turtles are quick to slide right into the water at the first sign of danger. That fast escape is exactly how they earned their name.
