Actor Djimon Hounsou is taking to Richmond, Virginia, to host his fourth annual run in an effort to promote the preservation of Black history.

On Sept. 27, the Djimon Hounsou Foundation will host its “Run Richmond,” featuring running and walking routes designed to honor the history of African enslavement across Europe and the Western world.

Hounsou, a native of Benin and star of Steven Spielberg’s 1997 film Amistad, hopes the event will inspire greater awareness of the history linking the United States and Europe to African nations.

Gaskiya’s Compound was designed as a portal for African-centered education for our community. As I have traveled the globe, it has never ceased to amaze me how negligent history has been in promoting the truth of Africa and African communities’ contributions to the world we now live in. When COVID-19 hit, instead of traveling and providing cultural arts programs to individual communities and companies, I moved to an online platform. Although I still provide training sessions and present at various conferences, in light of new laws and regulations aimed at erasing our history, I have decided to package lessons for homeschoolers and those interested in curriculum focused on our history and continued contributions through curriculum memberships and subscriptions via my website, Gaskiya’s Compound.

Additionally, I am partnering with an amazing creator from Uganda who will be supplementing our curriculum with AI-designed and created media. Together, we hope you will join and support us on this journey of reclaiming our right to existence on the global stage.

Black history every Month! Did you know Black eyed peas dropped on trails or near the river’s edge were a warning sign that it was not safe to move about. The peas indicated that patrollers, slave traders and others looking for runaways were in the vicinity and that there were ‘too many eyes watching’ or ‘too many people looking for runaways. The history of black eye peas is one of the evidences to help trace the origins of African Americans, from the enslaved Bantu people who brought with them this beans from Africa to the Americas.

Did you also know that black eye peas; an African American dish, has its origins in central Africa? Yes, these peas are called Kunde in the region of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania and among many others, farmed by predominantly Bantu farmers Kunde or black eye peas is a traditional Bantu dish, people in these regions may eat both the tree leaves as well as the peas.
