The Elephant in the Room is an initiative of The Arc of South Carolina designed to help facilitate conversations about love, s*x, dating, and puberty between parents/family members and their teens and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This playground is being built for EVERYONE in the our community, by our community! I love the communication boards! This will be a game changer for so many children!!

Vocational skills training is so important for every young adult, but particularly valuable for individuals who have learning differences, communication difficulties, and other challenges that will impede their ability to be successful with employment. We are trying to fill the gap and assist young adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities to gain all the skills necessary to be able to obtain and retain gainful employment upon completion of their internship!

Today marks the start of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This year’s NDEAM theme is, “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion,” which reflects the importance of ensuring that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have full access to employment and community involvement during the national recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has disproportionately affected people with IDD who have historically faced significant barriers to employment. More than one million people with disabilities lost employment during the first six months of the pandemic, as noted by the New Hampshire University Institute on Disability.

While it is true that COVID-19 has impacted us all, we must continue the work of increasing access and opportunity to employment opportunities that afford individuals with IDD the opportunity to earn an income of their own and contribute to their communities in a meaningful way.
