2023 Parade of Graduates!

The 2023 (soon to be) CHS graduates paraded through MES, ACES, IES and Henry Hill this morning in their caps & gowns. I saw a few tears as these students saw past favorite teachers, favorite staff, and reminisced in their old stomping grounds! It is so fun to see the elementary school students reaction as they look up to these amazing students!

Senior AVID student Joshua Peters spoke in front of the Senate Education Committee urging them to support HB 3120 earlier this week. HB 3120 requires Higher Education Coordinating Commission to establish grant programs for the purpose of supporting organizations to expand scope and community outreach of college access and success programs such as AVID. Joshua Peters provided testimony about how AVID impacted his life and how it supported him to achieve his goal of attending college.

AVID is Advancement Via Individual Determination, which provides college and career readiness for middle and high school students. TJ Bailey is the Central High School AVID Site Coordinator, and AVID 12 teacher. Special thanks to TJ for supporting Joshua in this opportunity.

5 CHS students has work recently accepted into Western Oregon University's juried art show: ALL of ME: Art at the Intersections of Identity. Congratulations to Norah Steed, CJ Jacobson, Emma Diehm, Wendy Corona Herrera and Jack Light!

These students had their work accepted into the show by this year's juror: a professional artist from Eugene. The artwork will be displayed in the Hamersly Library Gallery at Western Oregon University. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced at the opening ceremony on Friday, June 2nd from 4pm-6pm. The show will be up for the month of June to celebrate Pride.

Below are some pictures of Norah, Emma, and Wendy's work. Jack's piece is in the display case in the main hallway at CHS, but will soon be moved to WOU.

Shown also are Perla San Miguel Morales, Gianna Mejia, and Emma Sauer and their artwork from Western Oregon's Art Fest from earlier this month. We also saw CHS Alum and current WOU student Stephanie Herrera Salas receive an award for her Studio Art class at Western Oregon!

On a related note: Emma Sauer submitted a design to Monmouth Pride and her design won 3rd place. This contest was open to the whole community - not just Central SD students.

Emma's piece will be on the cover of this year's Senior Awards Night program.

Congrats to our amazing CHS Artists!

And a huge thank you to Lauren Cooney, the Visual Arts and Graphics Design teacher at Central High School who has provided many opportunities for our students to participate in events in our community and other areas outside of CHS.
