Sharing from AAUP National:
ICE isn’t invincible. ICE depends on private corporations, and universities have real leverage over those companies through purchasing, partnerships, and public legitimacy. That’s why the fastest way to shrink ICE’s capacity is to cut off its corporate support: push our schools to stop funding and normalizing ICE collaborators. "Ohio’s dwindling enrollment has little to do with marketing and campus tours and everything to do with values. And SB 1 sends exactly the wrong message to every student and scholar considering Ohio."

GOOD NEWS from our Allies at OEA!
Judge Temporarily Blocks Law Removing Educators’ Voice on the STRS Board
Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Andy Miller issued a major ruling to protect educators’ voice in the future of the State Teachers Retirement System by granting a temporary restraining order preventing the provisions in the state budget affecting the STRS Board makeup from taking effect until a preliminary injunction hearing is held. This ruling is in response to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Ohio Education Association (OEA), the Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT), and the Ohio Conference AAUP of the American Association of University Professors.

An important message from AAUP National:
The AAUP notes with great alarm the rash of recent administrative actions to discipline faculty, staff, and student speech in the aftermath of the murder of Charlie Kirk. We write to remind leaders of colleges and universities of their fundamental duty to protect academic freedom and the absolute necessity to ensure that the freedom to discuss topics of public import without constraint is not curtailed under political pressure. As established in the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, faculty are entitled to hearings under long-standing principles before they may be subject to discipline. At a moment when higher education is threatened by forces that seek to destroy it and its role in a democratic society, the anticipatory obedience shown by this rush to judgment must be avoided. Important message from our Ohio Conference AAUP:
The measly 2.8% SSI "increase" in state funding over the biennium will hardly cover SB 1 compliance, let alone allow institutions to deal with inflationary pressures, retain and hire faculty and staff, as well as keep tuition low for students.
We must ensure that institutions are developing policies on everything related to SB 1. Administrators cannot simply go around invoking SB 1 as they tear down posters from faculty doors, try to make faculty change their academic profiles, or require every institutional entity to make unnecessary changes to their mission statements.
The fights are now on our campuses, and we will be pushing back.
DEI offices shuttered, costs mount as Ohio universities comply with SB 1
Schools across the state are eliminating DEI offices, restructuring programs, and implementing new course requirements.
