I'm sharing this dear to me fundraiser for a dear to me friend, Lu Aguirre. We have been working together (as you may have seen before) for many years now on her recovery from a spinal cord injury. We have seen very promising reconnections and movement we never once thought possible per her diagnosis. Covid hasn't been easy (duh), as we have had to suspend sessions but during our break Lu has found equipment and has been approve to be a candidate for, ROKIWHEELS. This is an exoskeleton type machine that will help her with mobility via the machine, yes, but more importantly will help her gain and maintain muscles needed for walking. This is something she will be able to do on her own that will greatly improve her quality of life and our efforts of progressing her through her recovery. As many people know, insurance companies have been our biggest hurtle when self advocating for her recovery journey. This equipment is 100% funded out of her pocket and as a single mother of two, this seems daunting. This is why we are reaching out to our community to ask for your help. 10 years ago I was diagnosed with a tumor in the center of my thoracic spine. During the removal surgery I became paralyzed from the waist down, which subsequently left me wheelchair bound and changed my life as I knew it. The medical prognosis concluded that I would never be able to move or feel anything from the waist down again, but with determination and hard work in therapy I have shown the doctors otherwise.
Much to their surprise, the doctors have now said that I have a great chance of walking again since I have regained sensitivity and movement in my legs. To maintain and continue my progress forward, more therapy and interventions are still required. While on my self advocating journey of recovery I have found ROKIWHEELS. After an evaluation I have been approved and considered an excellent candidate for the use of their amazing standing wheelchair ( www.rokirobotics.com ). This machine will help me regain greater mobility, continue to strengthen the muscles needed for locomotion and above all will provide me with better quality for this great life I want to live.
Unfortunately, my health insurance does not cover expenses for this life changing machine, my continued movement therapy, or even for my most basic needs for recovery. So, as a single mother of two seeking better quality of life, I am asking for help.
