Low-Res MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at UNR A low-residency MFA Interdisciplinary Arts program at University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe

The University of Nevada, Reno began operations at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe on July 1, 2022, after entering into an agreement to acquire Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village, Nevada. Through an interdisciplinary approach to artmaking, the program considers how we engage the material and social worlds of our respective environments—from personal, to political, to planetar

y. This experience and exploration of embodied place is central, encouraging students’ intricate relationship with their environment both here in the Tahoe Basin and within their home communities. The low-res MFA-IA program offers an alternative to a traditional MFA program, in both structure and philosophy. While we are a full-time program, we consciously designed the ten-day residencies knowing not everyone can take off for an entire summer or multiple weeks at a time. We know that dedicated, talented, driven artists, and thinkers have children, jobs, or other responsibilities that make it difficult for them to commit to a conventional on-ground MFA program.

Students getting curious from this summer‘s creative problem-solving course.

This course examines how artists experiment with and manipulate language in diverse forms:
writings, statements, lectures, interviews, instructions, and beyond. And how experimentation
with language becomes a tool for creative problem solving in one’s creative practice.

We are over the moon excited for the 6 fantastic thesis students. They’ve worked over the last 2 years to get to this final stage of their MFA experience.

Over the next 4 months each of these amazing humans will present a solo show in their home town. This brings their celebration of the program from Incline back into their communities.

Our brought back the infamous tents! With help from faculty Roman de Salvo these students made exhibition spaces come to life outside the galleries.

Over the last everyone has been researching and experimenting through material - dialogue - and risk taking. Here are just a few snippets from the tents going up, individual pieces of work, and celebrations!

Today, everyone checks out. Returning to their home. To their families. To their jobs. To reflect over the last 10 days and one single post wouldn’t do this magic justice. Thank you to all the students, staff, faculty, and the UNR Lake Tahoe, team!

Stay tuned for more photos, videos, and community! Will be back in January to do it all over again.
