NVC Women in STEM Empowerment - WISE

NVC Women in STEM Empowerment - WISE A club that provides support for female STEM students, while helping them connect with peers and resources.

The Women in STEM Empowerment (WISE) club at Napa Valley College was initiated by Shannon Swiney in 2014 with funds from a grant awarded to the local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). AAUW seeks to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. WISE follows this same mission, though the focus of our club will be women in sc

ience, technology, engineering and mathematics. Women in these fields of study are often underrepresented, and can face gender bias in their classes and careers. The club hopes to unite STEM women with their peers, so that they can form a network of like-minded women to support them throughout their academic pursuits, and into their future profession. The club also hopes to help more women become interested in entering the STEM fields though community outreach and events designed to showcase women in these professions. We hope you will join us so together we can advance gender equality in STEM, and build a strong network of intelligent, hardworking women for the future.

Our 3rd Annual SciTech Girls was a success! We hope our participants enjoyed our event and learned new information about STEM career fields!

Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped our 3rd Annual SciTech Girls become a reality! WISE appreciates our speaker panelists donating their time to share their experiences: Sgt Sunny Conger, A1C Mickey Cooper, Lotte Cosca, Maureen Long, Erica Ahmann Smithies, and Samara Trilling. We also appreciate NVC's MESA clubs, DOCC, Discovery, and Robotics, for leading the workshops. And finally, we appreciate our various student and community volunteers who helped our event function smoothly.

It's time for our annual spring event, SciTech Girls! This event introduces girls, ages 12-14, to STEM career fields through STEM modules and a speaker panel of women in STEM careers or pursuing STEM degrees. This year, our SciTech Girls event will be held on April 29th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
