🎃 Montessori Practical Life. Sewing Work — Making Pumpkins
Little hands, colorful yarn, and big accomplishments!
Fall brought to Idyllwild Montessori a wonderful opportunity to combine creativity with Practical Life skills! 🍂
Our students are busy making their own fluffy pumpkins by sewing with orange yarn and a plastic needle.
This engaging activity invites children to practice threading, sewing, and carefully guiding the needle through their work. As they wrap and stitch the yarn, they develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and patience.
Using simple materials—including a cardboard roll, orange yarn, a plastic needle, and green or brown pipe cleaners for the stems—children transform everyday objects into festive creations.🍁

Montessori Cultural Subjects - Biology. There is so much to discover beneath the surface!
On our Montessori Cultural Subjects shelf, we have a special Biology activity featuring the Human Anatomy Apron. This hands-on material invites children to explore the human body by identifying the organs and placing them in their proper positions.
Our young explorers are often amazed when they see the skeleton model. It's hard to believe that beneath our skin, we all have a skeleton that supports our bodies and helps us move!
And what about our internal organs? The heart, lungs, stomach, and other organs work together as an extraordinary living system. Day and night, whether we are asleep or awake, our bodies keep working — breathing, circulating blood, digesting food, and carrying out countless essential functions. Isn't it amazing how much is happening inside us every moment?
Through this engaging, hands-on experience, children develop scientific curiosity, expand their vocabulary, and begin to understand the wonderful organization of the human body.
At Idyllwild Montessori, we believe that learning begins with curiosity, grows through exploration, and becomes meaningful through hands-on discovery.

Montessori Cultural Subjects - Biology. Discovering the Human Body! 🧠
How amazing is the human body!
On our Montessori Cultural Subjects shelf, we have a special Biology activity featuring the Human Anatomy Apron. This hands-on material invites children to explore the human body by identifying the organs and placing them in their proper positions.
First, the child carefully arranges the organs on the font and back to the apron, learning about their names, locations, and basic functions. Then comes the exciting part — putting on the apron and discovering what we have inside our bodies! 🫁❤️
Through this engaging, hands-on experience, children develop scientific curiosity, expand their vocabulary, and begin to understand how wonderfully our bodies are organized.

Montessori Sensorial. Color Tablets Matching Work
In our Montessori Sensorial area, children explore the beautiful world of colors through the Color Tablets Matching and Grading Work.
This activity invites children to observe, compare, and match tablets of the same color, developing their visual discrimination and ability to recognize similarities and differences.
As children carefully select and pair the matching tablets, they refine their visual perception, strengthen concentration, and develop attention to detail. The simple act of matching becomes a meaningful learning experience that prepares the mind for future academic work, including art, language, and the understanding of color gradation.
Learning through the senses is the foundation of understanding the world around us.
In the Montessori classroom environment, every material has a purpose, and every independent discovery brings a child one step closer to mastery.

Montessori Math. Numerals and Counters — Odd and Even Numbers
In our Montessori classroom, children explore the fascinating world of numbers through hands-on learning!
With the Numerals and Counters material, children match each numeral with the corresponding quantity, placing the counters in pairs beneath each number.
As they arrange the counters, they begin to discover the difference between odd and even numbers. When the counters can be paired perfectly, with none left over, the number is even, we call it - "partners". When one counter remains without a partner, the number is odd - "no partner"!
This beautiful Montessori work helps children develop number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, visual discrimination, and logical thinking while building a concrete understanding of an abstract mathematical concept.
Through observation, exploration, and repetition, children discover mathematical patterns independently.
From concrete materials to abstract understanding, the joy of discovery is at the heart of Montessori Math.

Montessori Practical Life - Sweeping with a Witch’s Broom! 🧹
A little touch of Halloween magic makes Practical Life even more exciting!
Today, our students practiced sweeping plastic pumpkins and acorns with a special witch’s broom. We noticed that the children were much more enthusiastic about sweeping with this fun, seasonal broom than with a regular brush! In the Montessori environment, we call it a “point of interest.”
This hands-on activity, children develop their fine motor coordination, concentration, control of movement, and independence. They practice gathering small objects together, directing the broom with purpose, and taking responsibility for keeping their environment clean and orderly.

In the Montessori classroom, even the simplest everyday tasks become meaningful learning experiences. And sometimes, all it takes is a witch’s broom to turn an ordinary activity into a little seasonal magic! 🧙‍♀️

Montessori Language - Sandpaper Letters. We learn the letter "t".
Using the Sandpaper Letters, children trace it with their fingertips 3 times, following its shape while repeating its sound. This beautiful Montessori material brings together touch, sight, movement, and sound, helping children build a strong connection between the symbol and its sound. It is indirect writing, and we always start tracing from the top of the Sandpaper Letter.
Maria Montessori understood something profound: the hand is closely connected with the development of the mind. When a child touches and traces a Sandpaper Letter, the fingertips receive sensory information about its shape and movement. That information travels through the nervous system to the brain, where it is processed together with what the child sees and hears.
This is why the Montessori method is hands-on.
We bring real objects, props, pictures, and books connected to the sound the child is learning. In playful form, children can touch, explore, name, and discover things related to the certain Sandpaper Letter, making language meaningful and connected to the world around them.

🎃 Montessori Practical Life -Washing a Pumpkin
Practical Life activities are an essential part of the Montessori classroom.
Our seasonal Practical Life activity is washing a pumpkin!
It may look like a simple task, this work involves a sequence of steps that encourages children to slow down, focus, and coordinate their movements.
The process includes:
Opening the soap bottle and carefully using the eyedropper lid to apply soap to the pumpkin.
Pouring a small amount of water from a handled pitcher.
Scrubbing and rubbing the pumpkin to clean its surface.
Wiping the pumpkin with a cloth.
Pouring the remaining water from the container into the sink.
Rolling the cloth neatly.
Returning all materials to their proper places.

What does the child learn through this work?
Fine motor skills: opening the bottle, manipulating the eyedropper, gripping the scrubber, squeezing and controlling the cloth, and rolling it all strengthen the small muscles of the hands and fingers. These movements help prepare children for writing, drawing, buttoning, and other tasks requiring precise hand control.
Gross motor skills: reaching for materials, maintaining a stable posture, coordinating arm movements while scrubbing, and carrying and pouring a container of water engage the larger muscles and develop whole-body coordination and balance.
Also, it develops hand-eye coordination,
concentration and sequencing, following a multistep process helps children develop attention, working memory, and the ability to organize actions in a logical order. Each step has a purpose, and each completed step brings the child closer to finishing the task independently.
Moreover, it helps to develop practical life skills and independence.
And ,what is the most important for the child, this work is FUN! 🎃

Parents at Idyllwild Montessori School.
We continue to post about Parents' participation in our school life.
We believe that parents are an important part of our school community.
From 2012, when our school was created, till now, parents of our students have joined us for special presentations, field trips, and Birthdays celebration, giving children a real connection with the world beyond the classroom.
We have welcomed parents, who shared stories about their professions—from teachers, gemologist, pilot, restaurant and gym owners and many other.
They teach children, that every person has something valuable to share, that every profession contributes something to our community, and that every culture has its own beauty and traditions.
This is Montessori education at its best -
the child learns from the environment—and the environment extends far beyond the classroom.
Thanks to all former and present students' parents for becoming part of our school!
