“For many of our students, September 11 is an event they know only through history. For many of us, however, the memories of that morning remain vivid. Twenty-five years later, we have an important opportunity to help a new generation understand not only the tremendous loss our nation experienced that day, but also the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, service, and unity that followed.
Today, we remember the 2,977 lives lost. We honor the firefighters, law enforcement officers, first responders, members of our military, and ordinary citizens who demonstrated remarkable courage in the face of unimaginable circumstances. We also remember the thousands of men and women who, in the years that followed, answered the call to serve our country and defend the freedoms we enjoy.
I am deeply grateful for those who have sacrificed, and continue to sacrifice, in the name of freedom. I am also grateful for our teachers and staff and the important role they play in helping our students understand the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.
As we reflect today, I hope we will remember those we lost, honor those who served, and renew our gratitude for the freedoms we are privileged to enjoy as Americans. May we never forget.”
