INSTRUCTOR SHOUTOUT
Over the last few years I’ve trained with more than 60 instructors outside of my agency requirements. I am regularly asked who I recommend and will be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.

Today I’m spotlighting Michael Janich of Martial Blade Concepts .
Michael has been one of the most influential mentors in my life. I’ve personally trained with him since 2016 and earned full certification as an MBC instructor under him. His influence goes beyond personal protection he’s shaped how I think about life, responsibility, and what it actually means to teach effectively.

His background is unique. Decorated Army veteran and former DoD intelligence officer. Nine years in Army Intelligence, including time at the NSA, then work with the Defense Intelligence Agency and leading POW/MIA investigation teams in Vietnam and Laos. That experience shows in everything he teaches, practical, reality based, no nonsense.
After the military he ran Paladin Press’s video production for a decade. He recruited and worked with some of the best in the industry, and produced over 100 instructional videos. He’s a long time Spyderco designer, was the host of Best Defense on the Outdoor Channel, and still writes regularly for the USCCA’s Concealed Carry Magazine. He’s also authored multiple books and a large library of instructional videos.
What sets him apart when you train with him is the clarity and honesty. He teaches functional concepts. He breaks complex problems down into simple, trainable principles and makes you a better thinker, not just a better defender. You will leave his courses more prepared and a better person.
If you can’t get to him in person, his Distance Learning Program (DLP) is excellent. It now has over 80 hours of private lesson style material with new content added every month.
He’s still teaching regularly. His upcoming schedule includes courses in New Jersey, Florida, California, South Dakota, Ohio, and Maine. Check martialbladeconcepts.com for details.
If you get the chance to train with Michael Janich, take it. Highly recommended.

INSTRUCTOR SHOUTOUT

One of the things I’m most passionate about as an instructor is continual learning. Over the last several years I’ve trained with more than 60 instructors outside of my agency requirements. I am regularly asked who I recommend and will be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.

Today I’m spotlighting Adam Winch of Defenders USA I first met Adam as a fellow student in an RDS class. Adam is a perpetual student who constantly pushes his craft. I took a course from him in August 2023, it was excellent. Adam has real operational experience (LEO + military), competes regularly, and has a gift for teaching shooters of all levels with patience and clarity. Everyone in the class walked away better.
If you get the chance, train with him. He’s co-teaching an upcoming 8 day fi****ms & combatives course in Montana with Jeremy Horn Highly recommended.

Earn Your Draw
A conceptual class focused on the problem of accessing a firearm or knife while under resistance.
This course examines the practical realities of creating the conditions necessary to draw, managing the entanglement, establishing control, generating functional space, and disrupting the opponent’s structure so that the weapon can be accessed safely and effectively, when those conditions have been earned. The emphasis is on principle driven problem solving rather than isolated technique, bridging empty-hand combatives and armed response in a logical, reality-based framework.

A short history of my design the X16 Ginunting by Tops Knives.

The Ginunting first clicked for me several years ago at Martial Blade Concepts Camp when Michael Janich handed me a training blade. The forward curve, the balance, the way it wanted to cut, I knew it was special. That experience pushed me into its history and practical application. Years later, while preparing for a spot on the TV show Knife or Death, I needed a live blade that could handle serious chopping of the challenges and still hold up under hard use. I took the concept to TOPS Knives, and after development and refinement, the X16 Ginunting was born.

The X16 keeps the core strengths of the traditional design and upgrades them for real work. Full tang, 1095 high-carbon steel at 0.250” thick, black traction coating, and a black linen Micarta handle that stays secure when wet. The unsharpened swedge adds spine strength without claiming to be a false edge. At 23 inches overall with a 15.75-inch blade, the forward geometry delivers powerful cuts while reducing wrist fatigue. It comes with a Kydex dangler sheath built for a clean draw.

As a full time Agency Instructor and Fully Certified Martial Blade Concepts Instructor, I wanted a knife professionals could trust for survival, self-defense, or field work. The X16 delivers. If you’re looking for a modern Ginunting with real performance, get yours at any of the following dealers;

Necessary Force

If you carry a firearm or blade as part of your personal protection strategy, it is essential to understand the self-defense laws where you live. Across the United States, a core principle of self-defense law is that you may use only the force reasonably necessary to stop an imminent threat and create safety. Nothing more.

When a knife or firearm enters the equation, that standard becomes especially critical. You must be able to clearly articulate why that level of force was required. Clear intent, the means to carry out the threat, and the immediate opportunity to act are the practical filters I teach students to apply.

Technique alone is incomplete. Judgment must align with it. Understanding this is the foundation of both my upcoming open enrollment courses: Introduction to Blades in Spokane and Earn Your Draw in Rexburg. In these courses we will train the skills and the decision-making together.
I hope to see you there.
