While white and yellow pavement markings are the standard in most countries, some cities and regions use 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 to serve a special purpose. Depending on the location, blue may indicate dedicated bus lanes, bicycle facilities, emergency routes, or other restricted areas that require drivers to pay extra attention.

Traffic engineers carefully choose colors because our brains recognize them much faster than words on a sign. By using different pavement colors, drivers can often understand how a roadway should be used with just a quick glance.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 "𝐬𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬"?

Known as 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐬, these massive reinforced concrete structures are built over sections of roadway that are especially vulnerable to avalanches or falling rocks. Rather than trying to stop nature, engineers designed these structures so snow, ice, and debris slide over the roadway while vehicles travel safely underneath.

You'll find avalanche sheds in mountainous regions around the world, including parts of the United States, Canada, Japan, and Switzerland.

It's an incredible example of how engineering works with nature instead of against it.

Did you know the world’s shortest international bridge is only about 𝟏𝟎.𝟒 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠?

Known as the 𝐄𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞, this tiny wooden crossing spans a small stream along the border between Spain and Portugal. One end is connected to the Spanish municipality of 𝐋𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐚, while the other leads into the Portuguese municipality of 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬.

Despite being shorter than many vehicles, the bridge officially connects two different countries. It is primarily used by pedestrians, although bicycles and some other two-wheeled vehicles can also cross it. The bridge was constructed with funding from the European Union to provide a simple connection between the neighboring communities.

Even more interesting, crossing this tiny bridge once meant entering not only another country, but also a different time zone, since Spain and mainland Portugal use different standard times.

It may not carry cars or heavy traffic, but at just over ten feet long, it proves that an international crossing does not have to be large to connect two countries.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💡🚗

Did you know some roads are built across ground that never completely stops moving?

At the 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤, a section of the park road was constructed across an active landslide. For years, the movement was slow enough that maintenance crews could periodically fill cracks, level the surface, and keep the road usable.

However, the landslide gradually accelerated from inches of movement per year to as much as 𝟎.𝟔𝟓 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏. ventually, crews could no longer repair the road quickly enough to keep it safely open. Engineers are now constructing a bridge that will span the moving section instead of placing the roadway directly on top of it.

It is a remarkable reminder that building a road is not always as simple as paving over solid ground. Sometimes engineers must design around a landscape that is still actively changing beneath them.

Did you know that the 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 reaches a grade of nearly 𝟑𝟓%?

Located in 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧, 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐙𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 was officially recognized by Guinness World Records for its incredible incline. At its steepest point, the road rises about 𝟑.𝟓 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝟏𝟎 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐝 —making it a challenge not only for drivers, but even for people walking up the hill!

Because the slope is so extreme, engineers couldn't use traditional asphalt in the steepest section. On hot days, asphalt could slowly soften and slide downhill, so the road was instead paved with concrete to help it stay in place.

It's a fascinating example of how road design sometimes requires unique engineering solutions to keep drivers safe.
