American Karate & Martial Science

American Karate & Martial Science I am the Chief Instructor and Senior master at American Karate & Martial Science. I am a 10th Dan in American Karate.

I have over fifty years in martial arts practice and study. I have been teaching martial arts for over thirty-five years. American Karate and Martial Science is an eclectic system of martial skills which should not be confused with or considered to be a newly created martial art. It is merely my perspectives, influences and strengths of the martial arts of TaeKwon-Do, GoJu, Kenpo and modern Arnis.

My mission is to achieve excellence by matching hard work with potential. I believe that at any point in a persons life if you can reach one you can teach one. The physical and cultural arts are uniquely suited for the personal development of children and adults, stressing such values as respect, discipline, courage and integrity while also teaching goal-setting skills and instilling a positive work ethic. Psychological studies show that quality martial arts training improves the ability to focus, to concentrate, self-discipline, self-confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to manage stress. Martial arts also provide positive peer influence, pro-social activity and positive leadership from the instructors.

◼️When the Black Belt Returns to White — The Karate Path of Never Forgetting the Beginner’s Mind

A black belt is not proof of strength.
It is a promise to return to the beginner’s mind again and again, and to continue learning for a lifetime.

Before I entered the Shoreikan Tokyo Headquarters Dojo, I had already earned the rank of third-degree black belt in both Sh*to-ryu and the Goju-kai organization at the age of twenty-five.

Yet when I joined Shoreikan, I did not bring those ranks with me.

I began again as a 10th kyu white belt.

It was a fresh start.

At the time, I felt a little uncertain. Looking back now, however, I realize that it became one of the greatest turning points in my karate journey.

My mindset became simple:

“Do not rely on your past achievements. Polish the person you are today.”

Day after day, I went to the dojo.

Repeating the basics.

Repeating kata.

Repeating conditioning exercises.

There were no shortcuts, no spectacular techniques—only the steady accumulation of simple, often repetitive training.

After five years of daily practice, I was finally awarded my first-degree black belt in Shoreikan.

Receiving a black belt is not proof that one has become strong.

Rather, it is recognition that one has finally reached the entrance to the true path of karate.

Only then did I begin to understand its meaning.

The black belt I wear today is my third.

For many years, Shoreikan practitioners have worn black belts made by Shureido. These belts are constructed with a white cotton core wrapped in black fabric.

With daily practice—absorbing sweat, enduring friction, and accompanying countless hours of training—the outer black layer gradually wears away. After about ten years, the white core begins to emerge.

A brand-new black belt is beautifully black.

But perhaps the most beautiful belt is the one that has shared thousands of hours of training, countless punches and blocks, until its black surface has worn away and the white beneath begins to appear.

That white is the mark of effort.

It is the mark of years devoted to training.

Above all, it is a reminder to return to the beginner’s mind.

When people earn a black belt, they sometimes begin to think of themselves as teachers or as those who stand above others.

Yet the sight of a black belt gradually turning white quietly reminds us otherwise.

It is not about becoming a white belt again.

It is about recovering the heart of a white belt.

Never losing the willingness to learn.

Never neglecting the basics.

Never allowing pride to overcome humility.

That, I believe, is the true lesson a black belt teaches us.

My teacher often says,

“Karate is not a method of defeating others. It is a Way of cultivating human character.”

Kata is not merely a sequence of movements.

It is a discipline through which we regulate our breathing, correct our posture, calm our minds, and come face to face with ourselves.

Basic techniques.

Conditioning exercises.

Sanchin.

Tensho.

All of these exist to refine one’s character.

That is why there is no end to karate.

Earning a rank does not mean you are complete.

Becoming an instructor does not mean your learning has ended.

The true path is to keep moving forward, one step at a time, while never forgetting the beginner’s mind.

This is the spirit that has been faithfully handed down through generations.

To wear a black belt is an honor.

But that honor must never become arrogance.

A technique worthy of the black belt.

A character worthy of the black belt.

A spirit of respect worthy of the black belt.

To spend a lifetime polishing these qualities is, I believe, what it truly means to wear a black belt.

And someday, when the black fabric has worn away and the white core finally appears once again,

it quietly whispers:

“Never forget the person who first stepped into the dojo.”

The Way of Karate is not about pursuing black.

It is about continually returning to a heart as pure as white.
