🥊This is the oldest photo in existence we know of showing two people boxing.
The man on the left is William Perry AKA “the Tipton slasher” known locally as big Bill Perry born 21st March 1819 in Tipton, Staffordshire,England.
He was a british bare knuckle heavyweight prizefighter who started his fighting career in London at age 16 and was known as a “lumping lad, who, despite the drawback of 'a K leg,' could hit, stop, and use his 'fives' with formidable effect". He returned to his native “Black country” of the West Midlands and fought many bare knuckle fighters from the surrounding areas...Ben Spilsbury in Oldbury,Jem Scunner from Gornal, Tass Parker of West Bromwich. There’s a Pub in Tipton called “the Fountain Inn” it depicts a picture of the slasher on its entrance sign and was used as The Tipton Slashers headquarters for the Scunner fight. There’s also a statue of Perry erected nearby in his honour. It’s not far from my birthplace, all of 5 miles and I just found it interesting that the oldest known photograph of two men boxing or about to commence in a fight comes from so close to my hometown.
Look at the detail of the spectators clothes and the fighters boots.....I can see the Slashers right hand has his wrist turned facing upwards....many bare knuckle fighters would use the wrist to strike an opponent as it would save the hands and knuckles for a fight that could last up to 100 rounds (rounds weren’t scheduled 3mins like today) or over a number of days if and when daylight had dissipated. The guard (often ridiculed) was held low shielding the mid section as a majority of thumps exchanged were targeted at the torso and not the hard cranium skull bone which would easily dismantle, fracture or break even the hardest of fighters hands.
I find it all fascinating the roots and history of prize fighting,my hometown played a huge part in its beginnings.
The ‘Wild’ West Midlands or the ‘fighting’ Black Country has a very rich history dating back into the beginnings of the photography age…and way before that also.
Even in todays world of boxing the Midlands is represented highly.
