It’s pizza time! 🍕
Instructor Allyzah Allene Cabugao’s Small Group Communication class practiced group socialization and finding shared group identity with their ideal pizza slices! The students discussed what toppings belonged on the “best” pizza slices. After figuring out what all (or how little) they agreed on for pizza toppings, they discussed what personality traits, goals, and interests they all shared.
Surprisingly, pineapple on pizza wasn’t a central point of debate — nor was last year’s most controversial topping of mushrooms. Instead, the biggest debate was what place had the best pizza. So let’s take the debate to the socials: what would you say is the Best pizza place?

🎉 Celebrating 25 Years of Dr. Frances Brandau 🎉

We’re incredibly lucky to have had Dr. Brandau as part of the Communication Studies family for the past 25 years! From faculty member to now serving as our department chair, Dr. Brandau has spent a quarter century teaching, mentoring, leading, and helping shape our department.

That’s 25 years of students, stories, research, laughter, late nights, big ideas, and countless contributions to Communication Studies. ❤️

We’re so grateful for everything Dr. Brandau has brought to our department, and we’re even more excited to have her leading us into the next chapter!

Nic recently received “Sammy’s Shining Star Award”, signed by President Dr. White, for his exceptional service to Sam Houston State University and to the University Hotel. Nic developed, tested, and implemented a new front desk staff resource tool for the University Hotel.

The Bearkat Connect team is a collaboration between the Lamar Institute of Technology and Sam Houston State University. Selected candidates will be based at SHSU while teaching LIT students, supporting student success through quality instruction and academic engagement.

Congratulations to Dr. Caleb George Hubbard! 🎉
We are proud to announce that Dr. Hubbard has been named the new President of the National Storytelling Network (NSN)! This will be his third year as NSN leadership, having served as the Vice Chair Elect and Vice Chair in the previous two years.
In the second picture, Dr. Hubbard is pictured with his mentor, Dr. Trudy Hansen. Dr. Hubbard and Dr. Hansen acted as Co-Chairs for planning the 2026 NSN Conference. We thank them for their hard work organizing an amazing conference!

Greetings from Japan!
Our Summer Study Abroad program is off to an amazing start! Dr. Anya Lu and her students thusfar have visited Asakusa, climbed Mt. Tsukuba, and learned about and tried on kimonos. They will continue to experience and explore Japan for the next few weeks while studying COMS3370 and/or COMS4392.
