"You saved my husband's life." "This week I didn't go to the ER." "Now I can hear because of you."
Those are just a few of the stories emerging from UAH Neighborhood Nursing, which has already served more than 500 neighbors across five North Alabama communities. Today, program leaders announced plans to expand the initiative's reach, bringing neighborhood-based care to even more residents across the region.
Leaders also unveiled plans for SHINE 2026, the UAH College of Nursing's annual symposium, centered on the theme "The Power of Us: Healthy Neighborhoods Start Here."
Together, we're bringing care beyond walls and into the heart of our communities. 💙

From the lab to the front lines of public health.🦟🧪 Researchers at UAH have developed a new class of antiviral compounds showing strong potential against Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne viruses known to infect the brain.
Led by Dr. Victor Ogungbe and a team from the UAH Department of Chemistry, the breakthrough research identified compounds capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, dramatically reducing viral loads and achieving a 100% survival rate in preclinical studies.
The findings could pave the way for new treatments against VEEV and other emerging viral threats, including Chikungunya and Mayaro viruses.
