Last weekend, Grissom Choir had a wonderful time recruiting current middle school students into our program, through Mr. Ratcliff's annual Recruitment Day, and our 5th Grissom Choral Festival! Modeled after various Collegiate Honor Choirs, our goal was to inspire middle school students through discussions & choral singing so they will continue to participate in choir throughout middle school and high school. Thank you to our three feeder middle school choral directors for taking time out of their day to allow Mr. Ratcliff to speak with their class, and sharing their students with us at the festival!

Grissom Choir has been anxiously waiting to announce that this year, we will hosting the Grissom Choral Assessment, which will act as an in-house choral performance assessment for Grissom Choir, alongside its three feeder middle school choral programs: Challenger Middle School, Mountain Gap Middle School, & Whitesburg Middle School. In this assessment, each of the schools various choirs perform two songs in contrasting style in front of two performance adjudicators for ratings ranging from "Outstanding" to "Fair". The on-stage choir is then given a post-performance, one-on-one clinic with one of the adjudicators. This workshop is designed to encourage, invigorate, and enforce the daily teachings of each department, alongside the overall goals of Choral Music Educators in the state of Alabama.

We are beyond thrilled to have Dr. William Powell, director of choral activities at Auburn University, and Mr. Stacy Daniels, choral music director at Liberty Middle School, as our two inaugural clinicians for this year's Grissom Choral Assessment.

In a recent issue of a Scholastic publication, precisely "Scholastic News 4", there was an article titled "Should Kids Learn Music in School?", encouraging students and teachers to "Debate It", and cast a vote. The National Association for Music Education wrote a very detailed letter as to why music education is crucial for student development at all ages. It is also Grissom Choir's philosophy that students need to receive year-round music education in order for them to navigate the changing voice, so that they develop, progress, and mature vocally with safe vocal techniques.
