Industrial & Systems Engineering and Engineering Management
Industrial & Systems Engineering is a branch of engineering dealing with the optimization of complex processes or systems. It is concerned with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials, analysis and synthesis, as well as the mat
hematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems or processes. Its underlying concepts overlap considerably with certain business-oriented disciplines such as operations management. Depending on the subspecialties involved, industrial engineering may also be known as, or overlap with, operations management, management science, operations research, systems engineering, management engineering, manufacturing engineering, ergonomics orhuman factors engineering, safety engineering, or others, depending on the viewpoint or motives of the user. For example, in health care, the engineers known as health management engineers or health systems engineers are, in essence, industrial engineers by another name.

As we return from spring break, we’re reflecting on an incredible 5th Annual Engineering Showcase. 🎉 It was a pleasure to see our ISEEM students present their hard work and represent the department with such professionalism and excellence during E-Week 2026. We look forward to carrying this momentum through the remainder of the semester. 🚀

Throwback Thursday: UAH Faculty Edition 📚
Dr. James J. Swain | Department Chair & Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (ISEEM)
Dr. Swain attended the University of Notre Dame (BA, BS, and MS), including a year in the program in Innsbruck, Austria. His work with Dr. William Biles was later published as the Wiley text, Optimization and Industrial Experimentation. He spent two years at Air Products and Chemicals as a Systems Analyst, supporting mechanical and thermodynamic computations and simulation. He earned his PhD at Purdue University with work in Monte Carlo variance reduction applied to nonlinear regression estimators. He has taught at Georgia Institute of Technology and The University of Alabama in Huntsville, with visiting appointments at Purdue and the University of Miami. His research has concentrated on applied statistics and simulation, often in combination with each other. Recently he has become interested in heuristic methods of optimization including simulated annealing and genetic algorithms.
