The Sociology Department is pleased to announce an upcoming guest lecture by Dr. Katherine Maldonado Fabela, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Utah, as part of the department’s Guest Lecture Series.
Dr. Maldonado Fabela will present, “Studying Violence and Harm: Reflective Vulnerability and the Health Consequences of Family Separation,” a timely and critical examination of how structural violence, criminalization, and family separation shape health outcomes for marginalized communities. Drawing from critical criminology and feminist visual methodologies, her work centers the lived experiences of Latina mothers and their children as they navigate carceral systems such as child welfare, foster care, and mental health institutions.
An interdisciplinary scholar and mother from South Central Los Angeles, Dr. Maldonado Fabela earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed a UC Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at UCLA in Chicana/o and Central American Studies. Her research has been supported by national and international fellowships and grants and published in multiple peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. Notably, her scholarship on care has been included in policymaking toolkits at the United Nations, reflecting her commitment to advancing social justice and community-centered healing.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM in CHSS 110. The event is free and open to all majors.
