SHSU Family and Consumer Sciences

Recently, historical interpreter, Jude Routh curated an exhibit at the Margaret Lea Houston building, home of SHSU Family and Consumer Sciences, called "From Seed to Socks."

Here is a bit about it:
This display is the result of a year-long study involving growing heirloom cotton in the present day Houston garden plot. After processing, one 20 foot row yielded 10 skeins of yarn, which was used to make hand-spun items for display and use on the museum grounds.

Some of the items on display were made by Jude herself.
One of our historical interpreters, Taylon Black, put together an exhibit at the Margaret Lea Houston building, home of SHSU Family and Consumer Sciences, called "Dressing Margaret Houston." Here is a bit about the exhibit:

When it comes to outfitting the historical interpreters at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, our goal is to be as historically accurate as possible. While other historic sites may have clothing in their collections to use as reference for recreating ensembles, there is little left remaining of Margaret Houston’s wardrobe for us to use as guidance.

When a historic site has no visuals to use to refer to, the next best thing is to turn to primary sources such as diaries and journals, newspapers and magazine publications, or in our case, the Houston letters. When it comes to figuring out what Margaret wore, the Houston letters gives us much to go on.

In the days before her wedding, Margaret prepared for her trousseau three dresses: a purple silk, a blue muslin, and a white satin. Artist renditions of Margaret’s wedding portrait often portray her dress as purple.

Throughout their marriage, and during Sam’s time as a U.S. Senator, he would often bring home numerous dresses for his wife during his time in D.C., no doubt bringing home the latest and most up-to-date fashions.

Ledgers from the Gibbs Brothers’ store, a mercantile on the Huntsville square, also give details as to what the Houstons were purchasing on the home front: yards of calico, muslin, flannel, spools of thread and needles. The Houstons once purchased 18 yards of calico for $2.25.

Today the only semblance remaining of a dress worn by Margaret is a golden piece of fabric, barely twelve inches long that is on display at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.
