Our lower elementary, 1st through 3rd grade, students took a field trip to the library this week. They learned about the library, how to look up books, and even got to enjoy the new playground.

“There is a great sense of community within the Montessori classroom, where children of differing ages work together in an atmosphere of cooperation rather than competitiveness. There is respect for the environment and for the individuals within it, which comes through experience of freedom within the community.”

"The Best Place for Working Parents® (BP4WP) is a growing national network of business leaders who are showing that family-friendly policies are business-friendly policies.

The organization, which can be found in ten U.S. states, established a partnership with the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber Foundation in June 2022.

As of February 2024, 100 Huntsville-area businesses have earned this year’s Best Place for Working Parents designation."

We, the Montessori School of Huntsville, are proud to announce that we have earned this designation in the Huntsville area!

"Chelsea Montgomery works as an Adolescent Guide (Instructor) at the Montessori School of Huntsville, which has earned the BP4WP designation.

When Montgomery’s mother became ill and passed away at the end of the fall semester, the school’s administrators and fellow instructors worked together to support Montgomery and her family."

“When my mother fell ill, I had to miss several weeks of work,” Montgomery told the Business Journal. “All the staff and administrators rallied around me and supported me not only by taking care of my students and classroom but, more importantly, by providing emotional support. This helped me to be there for my daughter and the rest of my family during that difficult time.”

"If writing serves to correct, or rather, to direct and perfect the mechanism of speech in the child, reading assists in the development of ideas and language. In brief, writing helps a child physiologically and reading helps him socially" (Montessori, 1986, p.231).

Maria Montessori theorized that children from birth to 6 years move through intensive Sensitive Periods. These "periods" are like windows of opportunity in which the young child is working diligently to master a certain skill.
The most prominent Sensitive Periods for toddlers are language, movement, independence, and order.
Language is everywhere.
Movement is necessary.
Toddlers want to do everything themselves.
Order, though, society often tells us that toddlers are disorderly, but the truth is the opposite. Toddlers need order, and they crave it.
"I know a child of less than two years old who insisted on wearing her winer coat outside, even in the warmer months. She consistently put the tissues that her mother had folded and put on a little table next to her potty for use as toilet paper back in the box. She became upset when her mother had no bike helmet one day because she had given it to her six-year-old brother, who had forgotten his for their bike ride together. These are all normal acts for a two-year-old in the Sensitive Period for order" (Polk Lillard, 1996, pp. 31-32).
