Response to intervention/RTI cannot delay a request to evaluate for special education. They can co-exist, but schools should proceed with an IEP meeting. Their responsibility is to locate and identify all students with disabilities.

Every single month we have to make an appointment with a psychiatrist to manage ADHD medication. There’s a reason for this. They’re controlled substances. So when I ask for data collection in 30 minute intervals, please understand this isn’t to give you more work, it’s to ensure my client or my own child’s medication is properly managed. Children can’t always self report so charting behavior is necessary. Families risk their child becoming dependent or addicted to these medications, but if we don’t use medication, we risk them becoming illiterate and behind academically because they can’t attend.

Referral documentation as well as having the appropriate team members is extremely important in the initial stages of an IEP meeting. From my experience pragmatic language and sensory process often gets overlooked, ignoring the need for a speech pathologist and occupational therapist at the meeting.

Medication should not be the only intervention for children with ADHD. Pills don't teach skills. Intentional executive functioning instruction and positive behavior supports teaches essential skills needed to function.

*Medication management is a family decision and school systems should not suggest prescription treatment any under circumstance.

Accommodation vs. modification is often used interchangeably, but there is a distinct difference.

Sometimes the implementation of an IEP and 504 depends on parents speaking up. It’s a sad, but true statement, mainly due to systemic issues. Even as an advocate, you’d be surprised what schools have not implemented on my child’s IEP.
