Society of Yeager Scholars

The Yeager Scholarship is a rigorous and demanding full-ride scholarship program at Marshall U. To date, there are 35 classes of Yeager Scholars.

The Yeager Scholarship is one-of-a-kind program, fully covering tuition, room and board (including a meal plan), and fees. Scholars are given a laptop for their use while they are enrolled as Yeagers. They are given four intensive seminars that prepare them for a summer course at Exeter College in Oxford, England. Scholars also have the opportunity to study abroad in the country of their choice. Leadership, academic enrichment, excellence and character are emphasized and encouraged. The Marshall University Foundation has announced a gift of $25,000 to establish the Dr. Mathew and Mary Lauren Weimer Yeager Scholars Endowment.

For the Weimers, the gift reflects both gratitude for the opportunities the Yeager program provided and a desire to help extend those opportunities to future generations of scholars.

“We are honored to support the Society of Yeager Scholars in this way,” Dr. Weimer said. “This program shaped the course of our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined when I accepted the scholarship in 1997. We hope this endowment helps ensure that the program continues to attract outstanding students from West Virginia, the region and beyond, and gives them some of the same opportunities that have meant so much to us.”

Members of the Society of Yeager Scholars mourn the loss of Dr. Bill Denman, affectionately known as "Doc" to the many students whose lives he touched during his decades at Marshall University.

Doc passed away in June at the age of 85. A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the lobby of the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center.

A beloved professor, mentor, and scholar, Doc dedicated nearly four decades of service to Marshall University, beginning in 1965 and continuing until his retirement in 2003. Throughout his career, he shared his gifts as an educator and leader, serving as director of the Yeager Scholars Program, chair of the Department of Communication Studies, and interim director of the Integrated Science and Technology Program. In 1996, he was named Marshall's third Drinko Fellow in recognition of his outstanding scholarship at the university.

In 1986, Doc became director of the newly created Yeager Scholars Program, welcoming the first classes of Yeager Scholars to Marshall. For many alumni, he was more than an administrator. He was a teacher, advisor, advocate, and friend. He knew students by name, celebrated their accomplishments, challenged them to think deeply, and believed in their potential long before they could see it themselves.

His influence can still be seen in the generations of Yeager alumni who carry forward the values of scholarship, leadership, service, and community that he helped instill. The foundation of the program we know today was built in no small part through Doc's vision, dedication, and genuine care for students.

As we remember Doc, we are grateful for the legacy he leaves behind and the countless lives he shaped along the way. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by the Yeager family.

❤️ It was an honor to learn from local artist and entrepreneur Sassa Wilkes at West Edge Factory today and contribute to SOLIDARITY, a mural highlighting key figures in the WV Mine Wars. Prior to painting the historic Jessie Hatfield, our Yeager Scholars were joined by alumni, friends and family to tour West Edge and learn more about workforce development in place throughout Coalfield Development.

In addition to contributing to our community through art, this project helps highlight the people and places scholars learn about during their third seminar, Poverty in Appalachia.

What better way to begin a Yeager journey than by meeting the people who inspired your class name? Last night, first-year members of the Crutchfield Class spent time with Tony and Kim Crutchfield, Marshall alumni and dedicated supporters of the program. Their generosity and commitment continue to make a lasting impact on Yeager Scholars, past, present, and future.

🌟 Oxford Summer Spotlight 🌟

“While at Oxford, I grew academically, found myself, and learned about time. In one of my classes, we talked about how life can feel so empty when you fill your time completely up with things to do. When you slow down, keep time open, and try new things, life feels fuller.

As someone who has a full schedule every day of the week and would do as many things as she could to make her life feel full, I realized this summer that slowing down and trying new things can make my life feel full without burnout or stress. This summer, I was able to move at my own pace, try new things every day, and relax. These are things I often forget to do, or my mind won’t allow me to do.

Now, I feel that I can spend my time more wisely, focusing on new experiences and school with time left open to do whatever comes my way. I have learned that a busy schedule does not always lead to happiness. Friends, learning new things, and adventure can lead to happiness and fulfillment.”
