Summer Program Projects! These past few weeks the classrooms have had somewhat mirroring interests: birds and treehouses. As the interests continue to evolve there have been conversations in both rooms about houses, towns, and building. The documentation speaks for itself so please, enjoy! We can’t wait to see what will happen next and how might their work come together. 🐦⬛🪺🏠🌳

For the past few years we’ve looked over the brick wall and dreamed about expanding our playground into this green space. After months of planning the wall came down and a slide went in! However, the lack of direct sunlight, constant running feet, rolling of bike wheels, and all the rain, ice, and snow of winter… our green space turned brown. We considered many options to improve this space, to be more intentional with it, and to make it look loved and cared for. We talked, planned, designed, dreamed some more, and the most impactful… we asked for help. Thanks to the Sustainability Department for their donation of mulch and compost and our families who donated soil, supplies, plants, and time. Our outdoor learning environment is now rich with plants, natural materials, a HUGE dig pit (you didn’t think we’d eliminate all of the brown, did you?), tires for play and to create a path, a swing for relaxing in the shade, and plenty of opportunities to observe and interact with nature.

“My eyes are like a camera.” Yesterday two experts from the Visual Arts Center joined our classrooms to explore the parts and function of a camera. Using loose parts the children built cameras before testing them out at the Photo Booth. Then they practiced doing still, or moving, life drawings. Their peers modeled on stages while they were drawn. When wondering why staying still might be an important part of photography and drawing the children described the outcomes of capturing movement as soggy, wobbly, and scribbley.

The sky brought the rain, the smiles brought the sunshine, and together we made the playground look like a rainbow. Today both classrooms joined outside to explore paint, shaving cream, and water with one goal in mind…. MAKE A MESS! You could hear the giggles and squeals across campus as everyone, children and teachers, played together. Nothing without JOY 🎨🌧️🌈

We’re about one month out from our forest school experiences so this weekend educators and families met on the property to help clear the trail! We are so incredibly grateful for the support of these families and their shared love and appreciation for nature. We couldn’t do it without you. While we were there we saw 4 box turtles, 3 grown deer and 1 baby sleeping in some tall grass, loads of bugs, variations of flowers and edible plants, a family of wild turkey, and a worm snake. I wonder what we’ll see in July… 🐢🐍🦃🦌🌸🍓🐛🐜🌳

Summers on campus are for…. Napping in the grass, shaded by the trees, alongside the squirrels. Our preschoolers know how to kick back and relax in this beautiful weather. 😴🌳🐿️
