It says my nation is the nation above critique, above others, God's favorite. On June 17, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor from France aboard the French ship Isère.
But she did not arrive standing tall as we see her today. The statue crossed the Atlantic disassembled into hundreds of pieces, packed inside crates. France had gifted the statue to the United States as a symbol of friendship, freedom, and democracy.
The full name of the monument is Liberty Enlightening the World. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with engineering help from Gustave Eiffel, the statue would later become one of the most powerful symbols of hope in the world.
After arriving in 1885, the pieces had to wait while the pedestal was completed. The Statue of Liberty was finally assembled and officially dedicated on October 28, 1886.
Since then, she has welcomed millions of immigrants, travelers, dreamers, and survivors entering America through New York Harbor.
