The historic First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington, Vermont—built in 1816 at the head of Church Street—originally featured an early 19th-century timekeeper alongside a famous Paul Revere & Sons bell. As part of a major post-Civil War modernization project, the church contracted the prestigious E. Howard & Co. of Boston in 1872 to manufacture and install a high-grade mechanical tower clock. This upgrade fundamentally transformed the downtown landscape, as the building was structurally modified to accommodate a fourth dial, turning the steeple into a true four-sided community timepiece visible to residents, downtown workers, and lake travelers alike.
Over the next century, the clock room weathered severe New England elements, including repeated lightning strikes that culminating in an August 1954 strike that caused the entire 170-foot steeple to lean precariously. During an emergency dismantling and rebuilding effort between 1956 and 1958, specialized steeplejacks carefully salvaged the E. Howard movement and preserved it until the tower was safely reconstructed. Today, Hilltown Clock Repair LLC is in the process of restoring this historic mechanical movement, ensuring that a remarkable piece of 19th-century American industrial precision is preserved to keep time for the Burlington community for generations to come.
