We have joined forces with Marshall University's Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, Pre-Dental Club and JMELI to host a holiday toy drive for the A.D Lewis Community Center. Drop off locations and age-appropriate toys are listed in the image below. Please consider helping these kiddos have a wonderful holiday by bringing one new and unwrapped toy to one of our campus drop-off locations between Nov. 13 and Dec. 13.

Today, we’re introducing Senator Tabby Collins as part of ! Tabby is a freshman from Logan, West Virginia majoring in English education. She is an interim senator, who joined the Student Senate through SGA’s Apprenticeship Program.

Why is SGA important?
“SGA is extremely important, especially to someone like myself who came in knowing pretty much nothing about government processes, because not only is it an educational experience for senators, executive members, and the executive branch, but it gives the students a voice. SGA allows students to voice their concerns about Marshall's campus life and policies as well as actual state legislative policies which in the end helps to better Marshall University as a whole. All in all, SGA is important because we come together as a unit to make decisions for our constituents, and that to me is the biggest responsibility.”

Why did you choose Marshall?
“Throughout my entire high school career, I continuously visited Marshall's campus. Whether I was here to visit the medical school, participate in Science Olympiad, or compete in Marshall's S.C.O.R.E.S. competition, I always felt at home. I loved the atmosphere from the professors I met, and when it was time for me to start applying for college, I knew I couldn't go anywhere else. The size and placement of the campus were exactly what I needed to succeed.”

This week's interview is with Senator Alyssa Parks! Alyssa is a freshman from Hedgesville, WV majoring in political science and international affairs. She represents the College of Liberal Arts in the Student Senate.

Why is SGA important?
SGA is important on so many levels. SGA is important to me, personally, because it is where I have come to know some of the best people here at Marshall and have gotten to experience so many amazing things. I feel SGA has helped me to grow in so many ways. SGA is important on a school level because it is our job to represent the students, and to help better the university by listening to the students that we are representing. SGA is also important on a community level because we have done so much to help our community, even outside of the university. Each SGA Senator is required to fulfill so many service hours and SGA has also helped to host events for the community like 5k races and the Fountain Ceremony.

Why did you choose Marshall?
I chose Marshall because I wanted to stay in state, but also experience a new environment away from home. I also love the sense of community that comes with being a daughter of Marshall. I am thankful I chose Marshall because so far I have loved it here and it has become my home away from home.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about government and politics. I think the part that interests me the most is that there is so much history and theory behind politics but yet there is also so much room to grow and learn. I love election season and I love to stay involved on a local, state, and national level. However, in the past few years I have been fortunate enough to travel to France and Italy, which has led me to an interest in international politics. Since being at Marshall my amazing professors have only helped to further my interest in international politics, and I have recently decided that I want to study abroad before I graduate. I hope that my passion for global politics will be an avenue for me to travel around the world and to continue learning more.
