***Note: this foot is now 16 years old ****
I used to believe parents needed a receipt, evidence their child did more than “JUST” play.
I felt parents needed proof they were getting what they paid me for: to TEACH their child.
This receipt was in the form of a rigid schedule, flash-card games and other developmentally inappropriate methods of forcing letter memorization, adult-directed and heavily controlled play and an art project to prove their child was learning. And let’s me honest: the art project was mostly done by me.
During this time, I also THOUGHT I had so many behavior problems. Little did I realize THEN, that the problem was ME.
That was what I believed from 1998-2008.
This photo was taken in 2010...in the middle of the beginning of a very long journey towards a truly CHILD-LED philosophy.
This was the beginning of embracing child-led learning for me. This photo means the absolute world to me, as does the realization of its message.
I hope you also have that photo, or moment that signifies the beginning of positive changes in your work with children.
I share this every year with the hopes that it will resonate with a teacher who is stuck in the “receipt” stage of teaching. I hope it inspires change. ❤️

A couple weeks ago the Secretary of State, Kris Warner, visited our daycare! He listened to some of the challenges daycares and family childcares face in WV! He is an advocate for childcare and it was a great opportunity to share what we do with him!!! 💕🫶🏻

We need your help!!!
Submit public comments on the House budget bill, HB 4027, and encourage lawmakers to prioritize funding for child care.
West Virginia hasn’t increased dedicated funding for child care in years. Funding has actually decreased by $8 million over the last 10 years.
Meanwhile, families are struggling to find child care, child care providers are closing their doors, and employers can’t find workers. This is not sustainable. Please take a few minutes today to make your voice heard.
Submit comments on HB 4027 here:

💕✨Hello friends! ✨💕
Baker’s Nest Family Childcare Facility is now Nationally Accredited, meaning we are a Tier 3 daycare in the state of WV!!! 🌟This means we meet extra national standards to provide the highest of quality care!! This has been a long time in the making and our biggest goal since we opened in 2020!! 😭
Family childcare is very special to me because it’s based solely around family. We provide care for children starting as newborns all the way until they are 12! This gives families and children the opportunity to stay with the same caregivers, routine, and environment for almost their entire childhood. This is called primary caregiving and continuity of care. Studies have shown that this has a truly positive impact on both the children and families because of the deep connections and relationships that are made during this time. The children and families we serve become part of our own families!!
Family childcare is different than a center because we care for a smaller number of mixed aged children without separating them by age. (Kinda like a big family 😉). This teaches older children gentleness, compassion, patience, ect... The smaller children learn a lot from the older kids too like communication, how to play, and are great role models to them! Having this small number of children for a large amount of time creates lifelong friendships!!
My staff and I have hundreds of hours of training such as ACDS, WVIT, The Growing Brain, WV Elements, Mind In the Making, child development college credits; and many hours in different trainings about health and safety, professional development, leadership, child development, children with special needs, and nutrition. We also attended multiple conferences every year to stay up to date with current state and national standards. We are pediatric first aid and CPR certified!
Our program focuses on play and DAP(developmentally appropriate practice). This means that we recognize that each child has their own needs and learns at their own pace. We have a routine everyday that includes circle time, art/manipulatives, science activities, reading, outdoor play, and music and movement. We include all ages in these activities. However, we adapt this activities accordingly for each child to make sure it is developmentally appropriate.
Play is the most important way children learn in their first five years of life. So our focus is making sure children are getting many opportunities to engage in different types of play as possible: Free play, pretend play, structured play, exploratory play, sensory play, and more!
We also provide healthy and nutritious meals everyday! We do family style dinning meaning everyone sits together and the children serve themselves at the table. Just like a family would! They children help pass out plates, silverware, and napkins! This helps build relationships and communication/language skills! It also makes the children feel proud and accomplished! It provides them with opportunity to make their own choices as well.
Something else about us is we always look for ways to work with our community! We welcome outside therapies like Birth to Three, and very often work with our Local R&R (LINK) with Technical Assistance, Trainings, and the Trails Van! We also help to provide resources that our families may need!!
If you have read this far! I hope you learned alittle bit about our program! I’m attaching some pictures that I love (and have permission to post)! I’ve been working in childcare for 11 years now. It’s not just a job, it’s my passion!🫶🏻
My life goal and my mission for my program is simply to make a difference in children’s lives. To make a meaningful impact on them. To build a strong foundation for them. To love them. Because those first 5 years are soooo unbelievably important. What they learn, the relationships they make ,and the love they receive help shape them into the adults they are going to be one day. 🤍
