Silas Wood knows how to celebrate the holidays! To kick-off the last day of school before Winter Recess, our 6th graders were greeted by Principal Toto dressed as the well-known Elf on a Shelf, only this time, he could be seen from the Silas Wood roof! The day of celebration continued with hot cocoa with holiday characters, and concluded with the annual Holiday Sing Along with members of the Silas Wood staff.

The Voices of Walt Whitman went on a caroling tour today to bring cheer to our community. First stop was at Silas Wood where the high schoolers performed for Ms. Rivaâs sixth grade chorus students. The traveling group then went to Stimson Middle School to visit the 7th and 8th grade chorus students who got a chance to use their singing voices as well. The high school carolers then headed to The Bristal where residents enjoyed a number of songs and even sang along. The residents and the students both enjoyed interacting with one another before the group headed to the Dix Hills Diner for lunch and a quick tune before their final stop at the Walt Whitman Shoppes. Thank you to Mr. Altinel and Mr. Modelewski for helping Whitmanâs students share their talents and holiday cheer throughout the community!

Some silly but very smart puppets helped teach students at Maplewood a fun science lesson today about how the brain, heart, lungs, and digestive system work hard together to keep our bodies healthy. Ventriloquist, puppeteer, and musician Steve Petra uses all those talents in his show called âItâs Alive!â to bring the heart, lungs, brain, and stomach to life as puppets to explain how they work. Maplewoodâs 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders laughed, clapped, and sang while they also learned important facts about how the brain delivers messages to the body, how the heart pumps blood, and how long the small intestines are! Some students even got the chance to get up on stage and help. Thanks to Maplewoodâs PTA for bringing this engaging show to our students, and to Petra Puppets for making learning so much fun!
