Lamlameta: The Ancient African Game Before video games, there was Lamlameta. A game of seeds, pits, and strategy, played across Africa in homes, courtyards, and wherever people gathered. Archaeologists have traced its earliest boards to Aksumite-era Ethiopia and Eritrea. The game has travelled across trade routes and migrations, reaching West Africa, East Africa, the Caribbean, and even the Philippines. Today, it goes by many names: Ayo in Nigeria, Oware in Ghana, Omweso in Uganda. But the rules remain familiar: sow your seeds, plan your moves, claim your harvest. Lamlameta was never just about passing time. It sharpened mathematical thinking, trained strategy, and strengthened connection between generations. And it still does. This is Joseph Torobeka A legendary Burundian traditional musician, celebrated for his mastery of INANGA and other ancestral instruments. his lifelong dedication to performance, storytelling, and cultural transmission helped preserve and promote Burundi🇧🇮 rich musical heritage. As a member of Burundi’s national traditional orchestra (Nakaranga) he performed internationally, traveling and playing in countries including France, the United States, Canada, Italy, Germany, the Canary Islands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands during cultural tours and festivals. He started playing the inanga in 1954 and remains active today.
