SB 716 exists because of what Boyle Heights and East LA endured after the Lineage fire: months of toxic smoke, rotting food, and pest infestations, while the company responsible faced fines too small to matter. This bill gives cities real leverage to hold corporations accountable. Governor Newsom, sign SB 716.

The Home Energy Choice Act is a big no-brainer of California’s legislative session.

Check out a new op-ed from Matt Vespa in CalMatters urging Gov. Newsom to sign AB 2313. Right now, Californians don’t have a choice when utilities show up and replace the gas service line to their home. AB2313 would change that.

The bill requires customers first be given the option to replace their gas appliances with non-polluting alternatives like heat pumps or induction stoves and disconnect from the gas system with funds the utility would otherwise have spent on costly pipeline replacements. It’s just common sense.

Improving the effectiveness and scalability of renewable energy subscription programs will help them become or be replaced with programs that are more accessible to low-income and working families.

The revamped subscription program is aimed at reducing energy bill costs and ensure the cost of the program is not at the expense of others ( i.e. nonparticipating households).

Equitable, local-scale clean energy resources should be accessible to everyone, including those who have been harmed by the fossil fuel industry.

The State must invest in a community solar + storage program that secures proper workforce development standards where clean energy workers are paid at a prevailing wage.

Existing law (through AB 2716) states that oil wells in certain regions (LA County, near state parks and within Baldwin Hills Conservancy) cannot remain “low-producing” for more than 12 months without incurring a $10,000/month penalty until the well is plugged and abandoned.

The penalty fees go into the Equitable Community Repair and Reinvestment Account, which funds community benefit projects in the same region. AB 1661 (Bryan) proposes to amend this law to require that the first $5 million brought into the account must be used for direct cash assistance to families and children with respiratory health conditions living within 2.5 miles of Inglewood Oil Field.

This bill will ensure that impacted residents truly benefit from this program and create a model for environmental reparations within a historically Black community.

SB 1180 has passed through the legislature and sits on Gov. Newsom’s desk to be signed into law.

SB 1180 will ensure that California's Plastic Pollution Mitigation Fund (PPMF) does meaningful work to address the harmful effects of plastic pollution on public health throughout the entire life cycle of plastics. PPMF is funding committed by the industry ($500M annually for ten years) to mitigate past harms of plastic pollution.

SB 1180 supports communities burdened by plastic pollution. Gov. Newsom, please sign 1180 into law!

Mia Bonta has been a strong voice for immigrants rights, Medi-Cal protection, and addressing pollution in Oakland since her election in 2021. This year, she authored CEJA Action’s priority bill AB 40, the Community First Coal Review Act, requiring a full Environmental Impact Report before any local agency can approve a new or expanded large scale coal facility.
