Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and belong in the classroom.

Head Start’s current standards prohibit expulsion because of a child’s behavior and allow temporary suspension only as a last resort when there is a serious safety threat. Instead, programs work with parents, teachers, mental health consultants, and other specialists to understand a child’s needs and find solutions that support their safe participation.

As the federal government considers proposed changes to the Head Start Program Performance Standards, NHSA’s latest Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) issue brief explores why protections around suspension and expulsion matter for children, families, and teachers.

🌞 Family Fun Month is Here! 🌞

Who says making unforgettable memories has to cost a fortune?

Children don't remember the price of an activity. They remember how it made them feel. Sometimes, the most exciting adventures happen with a little imagination and things you already have at home!

✨ Try one of these budget-friendly family adventures this month:
🗺️ Neighborhood Treasure Hunt
Take a walk and see who can spot the most birds, flowers, mailboxes, butterflies, or funny-shaped clouds. Make your own checklist before you leave!
🎨 Nature's Art Gallery
Collect leaves, rocks, sticks, and flowers (where it's okay to do so), then create a picture, animal, or pattern when you get home.
🍽️ Around-the-World Dinner
Choose a country, learn one fun fact about it, listen to music from that culture, and make a simple meal or snack inspired by it.
📸 Alphabet Photo Safari
Using a phone or camera, work together to find and photograph something for every letter of the alphabet while exploring your neighborhood or a local park.
👨‍🍳 Mystery Ingredient Challenge
Let your child choose three ingredients from the pantry and work together to create a new snack. It might become a family favorite...or at least a funny memory!
💌 Kindness Quest
Spend an afternoon spreading smiles by drawing sidewalk chalk messages, making thank-you cards for community helpers, or leaving encouraging notes for neighbors and loved ones.
📦 The "What's in the Box?" Challenge
Before recycling those delivery boxes, turn them into something new! A spaceship, bakery, puppet theater, pet house, race car, or robot, let your child's imagination take the lead.

Every child faces challenges as they grow, whether it's learning to tie their shoes, making a new friend, or writing their name for the first time. Every parent faces challenges, too. The important thing is remembering that progress comes one step at a time.On Never Give Up Day, we're celebrating the power of perseverance and the resilience that grows when children and families are supported along the way. 💙

🎨 American Artist Appreciation Month 🖌️

Did you know that one of your child's very first masterpieces fostering significant potential? Every scribble, finger painting, and colorful creation is helping build important skills that prepare them for school and beyond!

This American Artist Appreciation Month, let's celebrate not only famous artists, but the amazing little artists growing in our own homes and classrooms. ❤️

When children create art, they are learning to:
🌈 Express their thoughts, feelings, and imagination.
✋ Strengthen the small muscles in their hands needed for writing, cutting, and buttoning clothes.
🎨 Explore colors, shapes, textures, and patterns.
🧠 Build problem-solving and decision-making skills by choosing materials and creating something all their own.
💬 Develop language skills as they talk about their artwork and share the stories behind it.
💛 Grow confidence by taking pride in what they've created.

🎨 Try this at home: Gather crayons, washable paint, recycled boxes, paper towel rolls, leaves, or even cotton balls, and let your child create whatever their imagination dreams up. Ask open-ended questions like:
✨ "Tell me about your picture."
✨ "What inspired you to use those colors?"
✨ "How did you make that?"
