One of the biggest shifts students experience in my essay workshop isn’t just getting words on the page—it’s finally knowing what they’re doing.

As Liam, one of my 2025 workshop students, shared:

“I didn’t think I would get this far in two days. That’s been really cool. I have so much more direction and a sense of what I’m doing than I had before.”

That sense of clarity can change everything.

If your teen feels stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin, this workshop can help.

When it comes to college applications, there’s no shortage of myths and misconceptions that can leave both students and parents feeling overwhelmed.

Let’s clear a few things up:

1️⃣ Myth: Your teen needs a really good GPA…or else
FACT: Colleges review applications holistically. Grades matter—but so do essays, extracurriculars, test scores, and their positive character attributes (which are revealed through the Personal Statement and Activities List).

2️⃣ Myth: More extracurriculars = better chances
FACT: Admissions officers would much rather see commitment, growth, and leadership in a few meaningful activities than a long list of random involvements. Quality always beats quantity.

3️⃣ Myth: The personal statement has to be a dramatic, life-changing story
FACT: The best essays often come from ordinary moments told honestly and thoughtfully. Colleges want your student’s authentic voice and a window into who they are—not a “highlight reel”.

4️⃣ Myth: Only A-list schools are worth considering
FACT: Some of the best-fit colleges for your teen may not be household names. The right school is one that aligns with your student’s goals, personality, and your family’s budget.

5️⃣ Myth: Smart students should be able to figure out college applications on their own

FACT: Today’s application process is more complicated (and more stressful) than ever. Even highly capable students benefit from guidance, structure, and the kind of support that answers their questions each step of the way.

That’s exactly why I created Complete Your Essay in a Weekend—to help students get clarity, gain the skills to write their best Personal Statement, and the structure needed to complete it in just two days, not weeks or months.

✨ A few spots are still available for our May 23–24 workshop

Okay, this caught my attention…

The first nine students who signed up for my May + June essay workshops —
every single one chose the “in person” option.

That’s not typical.

In the past, it’s been about a 50/50 split between in-person and Zoom.

And what made it even more interesting?

Many of these students are siblings of past clients.

Families who’ve already been through this at least once.

Who’ve seen what it looks like when a student has space to think, reflect, and actually figure out what they want to say in their personal statement — long before senior year ramps up.

For high school juniors, spring break visits are happening.

College is starting to feel more real, like “Is this the one?” real.
It’s no longer “someday.”

It’s, okay… this is actually happening.

And right around now, families start considering:
Are we going to figure this out on our own…
or will we get support for all the parts of applying to college that we don’t actually know how to navigate?

My first workshop kicks off May 23.

In person (Charlotte-area) or virtual — both are open.
✨ May 23–24 has only 5 spots left.
✨ June 13–14 has only 1 spot left.
✨ June 27–28 still has openings.

But if you’re local, I’d love to have your student with me in person.

Struggling with the college essay does NOT mean your teen is a weak writer.
Usually, it means they’ve never been asked to write like this before.

The college essay asks students to:
reflect
tell stories
connect experiences to their identity
write authentically without sounding performative

And no English class in high school covers any of this. It’s not on the curriculums anywhere that I know of (and Common Core ensures general homogeny across the U.S.).

But beyond that, most students need support to learn how to do it well.

They don’t know that they don’t know how to do the kind of writing the essay prompts require (and it’s not their fault that they’re left feeling overwhelmed or anxious as a result).

And that’s what makes the Complete Your Essay in a Weekend workshop special.

It’s not just structured time to work on the essay, or to help with grammar or editing.

We help students uncover their stories that are worth telling — and teach them step-by-step how to tell them well and in a way that truly communicates who they are. So the college admissions counselor gets who this student is, how they’ll contribute to their campus culture, and why they’re just the kind of student they’re looking for.

And when it clicks?

You can actually see the relief on the student’s face. Their shoulders relax. They sit up straighter as their confidence returns.

“This could be where I meet my next best friend.”
Yup. This is what college visits are often actually about.
Students aren’t just evaluating programs and prestige. That’s the logic side of their college hunt.
At a deeper level, they’re scanning for belonging.
They’re asking:
Can I see myself here?
Do I feel comfortable in this space?
Do these students feel like people “my people”?
Basically: Will I be okay here?
So if your junior walks onto a college campus and says, “This feels right” or “I like this school…”
Pay attention.
Why?
Because her lighting up BIG TIME is the kind of energy that will support her through the next 8 months or so. There’s a lot to do in applying to college. And we want that spark of excitement to blaze so she’s ready to do what needs doing.

Don’t force things. If you don’t have a “THIS!” response, there are more schools for you to visit.

And if you’d like help brainstorming the right schools to check out, I can help.

Parents of high school juniors: let’s talk college visits.

After 12 years of working closely with teens, I’m going to gently generalize — because patterns do emerge. Understanding how students experience campus visits can make those trips far more useful (and far less stressful).

Here’s what I often see.

👧 What many girls focus on during college visits:
1️⃣ Can I see myself here?
She’s imagining daily life — walking to class, studying in the student center, and grabbing coffee with friends.
2️⃣ How does this place feel?
The vibe and the environment. Is the campus beautiful or cozy? Welcoming? Does it match how she imagines spending her time?
3️⃣ How’s the food scene?
Bonus points for great dining halls and cute cafés.

Parent Tip: Timing matters. Visit when classes are in session. Watching students move through their day will help her sense if these feel like her people.

One client toured Duke (yes, that campus). Mom swooned. The daughter shrugged and said, “Meh.” And they moved on.

👦 What many boys notice first:
1️⃣ How’s the gym?
He’s picturing his workout routine.
2️⃣ How’s the food?
No, not the salad bar.
3️⃣ Did I see any cute girls?
Part of his unofficial “vibe check.”

Parent Tip: Relax and have fun. These visits reveal what genuinely lights him up. Lean into the humor — and remember, these points I just shared are generalizations. Use them to see if you can nail down your teen’s Big 3.

Another Tip: Tailor the visit to his interests. Not into sports? Explore music spaces, gaming lounges, e-sports, robotics labs, or engineering studios. The goal isn’t to manufacture excitement — it’s to find where it would occur naturally for him. And, no, it’s probably not on the campus tour.

The big takeaway:
College visits aren’t just about academics. They help students imagine everyday life on campus — and discover what fit actually means.

If you’re planning spring break travel, I’ve created tools to help families make the most of visits:

College planning is a lot like booking travel. ✈️

You can wait until the last minute. (Plenty of families do!)
Not because they haven’t thought about the trip, but... The destination stays open, the dates are still in limbo, and they telling themselves they’ll “figure it out later.”
But trips don’t get better by staying undecided. They get more limited.

Case in point: I’m heading into my third hour-long session trying to book one night in Charleston next month for the Bridge 10K.

Each time I check, there are fewer places, they’re farther away than I want, cost more than I planned… then someone else joins the plan, which makes me wonder if we should add a day since we’re already going… and somehow I keep hoping the options will get better instead of worse. They don’t.

Junior year works the same way. You can think about college planning for a long time—but the real advantage comes when decisions move out of your head and onto the calendar.

Junior year is the window where college planning actually works in your favor.
It’s when students can explore interests without pressure, visit campuses without having time to only visit the two closest to home, and start noticing what genuinely matters to them—before deadlines and urgency cloud the picture.

Here’s what I see every year:

Students who start deciding earlier don’t do more work.

They do more efficient and effective work—with less stress.
Their test plans are clearer because they had time to prepare.
Their summer opportunities (internships, or shadowing experiences) are intentional and strategic.

And they’re setting up a calm senior year… NOW.

The point isn’t to be early, but to give yourself and your junior time to get things lined up—without stress. This is how families who don’t tolerate chaos and who want the best possible advantages for their teens do things.

So, if spring break travel is on your radar (or even half-planned), having the right tools can make the process feel grounded instead of overwhelming.

That’s why I include:
• a Campus Visit Checklist
• a Dream School Guide

🚨 Parents of high schoolers: this 28-minute conversation will save you so much time, stress, and missed opportunities.

If you’re somewhere in the college planning process, go watch the full video — here are 3 highlights you’ll hear straight from the “insider” side of admissions:

1) A perfect score won’t “write your ticket.”
Even strong students get rejected when the college list isn’t strategic (or it’s built on prestige + vibes). This convo breaks down what families miss when they assume a great GPA and test scores = an automatic yes.

2) Build the list like a career plan… not a popularity contest.
We talk about choosing schools based on internships, pipelines, and real-world outcomes — including a surprising example of a school many families overlook that can set a business student up for massive opportunities.

3) Stop leading with the “usual suspects” in essays + activities
We unpack why so many students write the same first-draft essays… and the one filter that can instantly strengthen an Activities List: student-led vs. adult-led. (This is the difference between “meh” and “wow.”)
