During my visit to the Lake Bronson museum today, I stumbled upon a remarkable find. Mrs. Ann Bidle, one of my esteemed former high school teachers from Cook, Minnesota, revealed that she commenced her teaching career at Humboldt-St. Vincent High School when I started driving for Frito and driving from Roseau to Pembina. The Kittson County Museum houses annual records from the county, and was thrilled to discover the yearbook that featured Mrs. Bidle. Finding out that my high school math and science teacher from Cook started teaching in Humboldt, where I now live close by, was indeed a pleasant surprise that brightened my day :).

Memories from 1973…

Day 3 of the Winnipeg to St. Paul Winter Carnival I-500 snowmobile race (see last week's post for days one and two)! Ed Monsrud took the win for the race with a total time of 13 hours, 5 minutes, and 57 seconds. Only 22 drivers were able to finish the treacherous 3 day race. Pictured here we have Ed on his 1973 Polaris TX (this was a bit controversial because no one had won the race on a non-current sled). We also have a photo from the celebratory parade with Ed and Lois Monsrud riding through the parade in downtown St. Paul, MN. Keep in mind that Ed was a test driver for Polaris and he, along with his teammate Bob P., had bought pieces for their sleds from Polaris and assembled their race sleds after hours. Bob went on to place 3rd in the 1974 I-500 and clocked the fastest time in 1975 driving the same sled both years. Burt took 2nd place in the I-500 but wasn't able to celebrate because he had to fly to Traverse City, Michigan to race an Enduro Race with Wes Pesek and Leroy Lindblad. The team placed 2nd in the Michigan Enduro Circuit race. Pictured in the bottom right is the Enduro team of Wes Pesek, Burt Bassett, Leroy Lindblad, and Ed Monsrud. Ed's sled is displayed today in the Polaris Experience Center in Roseau, MN.

Nancy Snider Morrow recently posted this vintage Pembina High School graduation diploma, saying: “My grandparents Frank Snider and Mabel Ottem, and my Dad, Neal Snider, were all born in Pembina. My dad recently passed away and we are going through some of his items and found my Grandma's high school diploma from Pembina High School from 1917...”

I think it’s time for the Lady to come to a dignified end. The property condemned, then an area fire department come and do a controlled burn of the building, and the resulting hole filled in.
