Just a reminder that lunches will still be available for remote students through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Pick up locations are at the North Highland Elementary playground at 11:00am and then Stevens Pharmacy at the intersection of 15th St and 26th Ave at 11:35am. Lunches are provided on E-Learning days as well. Lunches are not provided on days when school is closed.

As we prepare for school to slowly start getting back to normal Monday, we wanted to go over a few changes to the traffic at North Highlands Elementary. North Highlands will see an increase in students this year until all the new schools are built. To accommodate this, there are a couple of changes we want the parents to know. First, ALL pickups and drop offs for the school will have to come in from Circle Drive. This year, 29th Avenue has been changed to a ONE WAY from CIRCLE DRIVE to 19TH STREET during the pickup and drop off times. This will alleviate the expected traffic congestion backing up onto 19th Street and causing an additional traffic problem. AGAIN, you will NOT be able to turn off of 19th Street onto 29th Avenue to go in front of the school between 7:00am - 8:30am & 1:30pm - 3:30pm. You MUST come in from Circle Drive. The ONE-WAY signs have been changed and we will have officers there assisting in making sure everyone is aware of the changes. Below is a map of how the traffic will flow. Again, these changes are only during those hours during school days. We understand this may be a small inconvenience for some, but this will only be temporary until the new school is built.

The first stop will be just past the school near the North Highland Elementary School playground from 11am to 11:20am. The second stop is from 11:30am until 12 noon, or until all lunches on the bus have been given out, in the parking lot that has Stephens Pharmacy on the corner of 26th Ave N and 15th Street. Please be patient as we all work through this new process. Everyone, please remember to wear your mask in line and please be sure to stand behind the line that has been provided. We want everyone to stay safe. In the event we run out of food on that load, you will be directed to Hueytown Highschool to receive a lunch. Remember, as Dr. G said yesterday, anyone enrolled in JEFCOED schools that are 18 years and younger can receive FREE lunches through December 31, 2020 as long as federal funds are available!!!! Thank you so much for your cooperation! We are all in this together!

TYPICAL PEER Preschool Registration
The application process for our Typical Peer Pre-K Program for the 2020-2021 school year is now open. This is a program for typically developing three and four year olds to participate in a pre-kindergarten program. Locations of Preschools are-Burkett Center, Grantswood, North Highland, Pinson and Greenwood. Screening sign up begins 4/1/2020.

Call Donna Powers at our Preschool office - 379-2820, to be registered for a screening date and time. This program costs $225.00 a month and is to be paid in one lump sum at the beginning of each month. Students will be released from the program if tuition is not paid on time or other standards are not met.

To be eligible for the program a student must:
-Be fully potty trained (no pull-ups)
-Demonstrate developmentally appropriate language, behavior, adaptive, and social skills
-Separate easily from family
-Live in the Jefferson County School Zone
-Have no IEP
*Parents must follow all set rules and guidelines for students to remain in the program.*

Students will be chosen for the program based on development. We are looking for students with good behavior who will be a great role model for others. Students chosen for the program will be notified by phone. This is the only sign–up for the 2020-2021 school year. For more information, contact the school at 379-2820.

So exciting!!!

In light of the announcement of school closures we will be forced to cancel our annual cookie dough fundraiser. We will ask everyone to refund any orders they may have gathered. We hate that we have to cancel but there is no alternative. We greatly appreciate your dedication to the school and PTA and we apologise for any inconveniences this has caused.

Parents:
As you are probably aware, the State Superintendent stated yesterday that school would be closed for the remainder of the year. However, education will continue for your students. These are surely difficult times, but the staff and I are already preparing ourselves to be available and ready to continue with teaching and learning. I will be having a meeting with JEFCOED Superintendent with further instructions as to the HOW we will be providing instruction to our students later today. He will be sharing that information with parents as soon as possible.

We miss you all and know that we are all following the CDC's recommendation of social distancing and washing our hands frequently. We are praying for all of our staff and students' families that we all may be safe and have no incidences of this virus. Please bear with us as we are working to get a plan in place to services all of our students.

We are awaiting information from the State Dept. concerning our special education students, but be assured all instruction and assignments will be following your child's individual education plan accommodations/and or modifications. Our teachers are working together to ensure all students are services accordingly.
