I think that this is a cool snake.

My friend Dan says this one has “floating saddles,” which seems pretty appropriate. Notice how many of the orange saddles appear to be suspended within all of that speckling rather than being neatly connected by the black borders that you typically see.

This is also one of those snakes with that really good “Davis” orange that I am always drawn to.

Probably my favorite snake that I have produced from this particular locality.

One of the features I pay the most attention to on gray-banded kingsnakes is the nuchal blotch, the first orange blotch immediately behind the head. In many snakes, it contains a larger amount of orange than the rest of the body pattern and can be surprisingly variable from one animal to the next.

This individual had one of the most impressive nuchal blotches I’ve ever seen. What really caught my eye, though, was how the orange extended forward onto the back of the skull, creating an unusual connection between the nuchal blotch and the head stamp. It also had small orange markings embedded within the head stamp itself, making the entire head pattern stand out even more.

I’ve seen thousands of alterna over the years, and this is one of my favorite nuchal blotch/head stamp combinations.

One thing I’ve learned after years of looking for Gray-banded Kingsnakes is that no two people seem to agree on what makes one “perfect.”

Some people like lots of orange.

Some like dark snakes.

Some like unusual patterns.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the really light ones. This one certainly qualifies as that.

This snake is pretty much the definition of an average Gray-banded Kingsnake.

No unusual pattern.

No rare color mutation.

No crazy locality traits.

Just a classic alterna.

And if I found it in the wild tonight, I’d be just as excited as I was when I found my first one many years ago.

Sometimes the snakes that best represent a species are the ones that remind you why you liked them in the first place.

This brightly colored individual is a good example. The amount of orange on some gray-banded kingsnakes can be remarkable, while others from the same species may have very little.

That incredible variety is one of the things that has fascinated me about these snakes for decades.
