Looks like the paint ran.

This is a new captive born Brewster County hatchling, and I really like what is going on with the pattern. Instead of the orange staying confined to the dorsal saddles, it has these orange bars running down the sides that almost look like the paint ran off the saddles.

I’ve produced a lot of Brewster County alterna over the years, but I don’t remember seeing one quite like this.

I have a feeling this one is going to be a keeper.

The first alterna of the year is always a good one.

I found this fairly typical looking Blair’s on a road cut in Pecos County back in May. It may not be anything particularly unusual, but I was pretty fired up to see my first alterna of the year.

I’ve always had a thing for the darker Davis animals, and this female is a good example of why. Most Davis don’t have a background color quite this dark, and I really like the contrast it creates with the red.

She is a captive born Davis female and definitely one of the darker ones in my collection. The older she gets, the more I like her.

Now this is a Davis with a lot of orange. If you have followed my page for a while, you probably already know how much of a sucker I am for a Davis with a lot of orange.

This one just hits different, though. She is an F1 female that I’ve been trying to outcross to a wild male for a couple of years, with no luck. I think next year I’m going to go ahead and breed her back to her father and see just how orange I can get a Davis.

I don’t usually post top down shots, but I thought this one really showed off her pattern well.

Alterna Minute #10

Pulling a fresh clutch of gray-banded kingsnakes and getting them set up until their first shed. I keep things pretty simple at this stage, with paper towel and a moist hide filled with ReptiChip.

This Brewster County male has been busy.

He sired a couple of clutches for me this year, and his babies are just starting to hatch. He produced some really nice offspring last year, so I have been looking forward to seeing what he would produce this time around.

I should have quite a few new Brewster County hatchlings to photograph over the next few weeks.

This snake is not quite what she appears to be.

Take a close look at the buckskin areas, especially around the head and neck. There is orange speckling scattered throughout the ground color that is easy to miss unless you zoom in.

She was captive born from two wild caught snakes from the Davis Mountains. Her father was an alterna, but her mother was a naturally occurring hybrid between an alterna and a milk snake. Genetic testing by David Hillis’s lab at the University of Texas confirmed her mother to be a 50/50 hybrid.

Troy Hibbitts caught both parents and produced this female. The clutch mates were all over the place phenotypically, but this orange speckling through the buckskin ground color makes this female especially interesting to me.

I haven’t produced anything from her yet, but I have a wild caught male alterna from the same locality that I plan to breed her to. I am really curious to see what comes out of that pairing.

Things are getting a little crowded in the incubator.

The Brewster County alterna that started pipping a few days ago are making their way out of the eggs. I checked on this clutch today and found several of them piled up together, with a few more still working their way out.

This is always one of the most interesting parts of the year for me. After months of breeding, laying eggs and waiting, I finally get to see what each pairing produced.

There is already quite a bit of variation showing up in this clutch. I’m looking forward to seeing what they look like after their first sheds.
