Bluebird Hill Homestead Cultivate the Connection www.bluebirdhillhomestead.com Bluebird Hill Homestead is the expression of every seed we have gathered along our journey so far.

Our mission is creating opportunities for people to experience a deep connection with the land, themselves, and their community. This is not simply learning ABOUT nature, farming, or sustainable living. We are providing an intimate hands-on experience, creating lasting connections through direct sensory immersion and intentional mentoring. Since becoming the stewards of this magical place in 2012, we have launched our kids classes and summer camps, hosted several community gatherings…AND…we moved here June of 2013 and lived outside all summer. We even survived 3 off-grid winters here living in a sweet little school bus while we built our home! Over the next several years, we plan to build a fully integrated homestead and micro-farm, with a natural built home for our family, an outdoor covered classroom, permaculture gardens, and small-scale livestock. A large portion of the land will be preserved and stewarded as wild space and habitat for local wildlife. As these pieces come together, we hope to be a beloved resource for the community. I’ll be teaching The Art of Bitters tomorrow at the St. Croix Valley Herb Fest with my friend and fellow herbalist Phyllis Jaworski!

It’s going to be a full day of herbalism, learning from 14 different teachers on a very diverse range of topics…flower essences, plant medicine and neuroplasticity, natural dying, foraging, herbal first aid and more.

Hosted at the enchanting Green Pastures Family Farm just outside River Falls.

Someone asked me recently if I had a “green roof” after noticing the cottonwood saplings growing out of my gutters. 😆 So I decided it was time for my annual climb up on the roof.

What a gorgeous day! And you can’t tell from this far away that my gardens are about 80% weeds at this point. Bonus!

FAIRY HOUSE BUILDING!

This is for all you wonderful grown-ups (and teens) who would love to spend a day awakening some of the magic that can get lost in the midst of our busy lives.

Just like a day of camp, we’ll spend our time exploring the homestead, playing nature games, connecting with the Earth, and building the sweetest Fairy Houses we can imagine.

We’ll gather stones, moss, bark, flowers, clay and other treasures from the land, then follow our inspiration. No experience, artistic talent, or particular level of “craftiness” required…just come with an open heart!

After more than 14 years of building Fairy Houses with kids in our camps, we know the magic of play isn’t just for children. You’re never too old to build a tiny house for a fairy.

Come spend a day outside, make something beautiful, enjoy the company of good people, and rediscover how much fun it is to simply make things because you can.

We (and the land) will provide everything you need to create a beautiful little shelter to take home for fairies in your own backyard!

After months (okay…almost years) of people asking when I’m going to offer herbalism classes for adults again, I’m so happy to finally have some on the calendar!

This fall, I’m bringing back the New Moon Herb Sessions...two full days of hands-on herbal medicine making here at the homestead.

TWO SUNDAYS, 3 CLASSES EACH DAY:

Herbal Bitters &Tincture Making
Herbal Bone Broth, Infusions &Tea
Herbal Salve, Lip Balm & Sunscreen

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11
Botanical Water Kefir

10am-5pm
$180 each day or $300 for both

Evening Primrose but a delicious morning snack. And isn’t it pretty covered in the early morning dew!

Today starts our final week of Summer Camp for the season so I was running up to the clay pit to fill it with water for the kids. And these were just too inviting to pass up on the way back down. Lightly sweet and juicy.

The sumac is primo right now and the forecast is for storms tonight so I spent dusk gathering enough for this year’s batch of Sumac Honey!

We’ve been sold out for a few months and the flavor is best if you can harvest before the rain washes away all the milky sap. The deepest red velvet clusters are best. Tart and lemony and the taste of August!

On our final day of Medicine Makers camp 2 weeks ago, the forecast said it’d be chilly and rainy all day. So we changed gears and planned a tea party with the kids to share with their families at Closing Circle.

My niece (Rosie in the light teal jacket) is a professional baker when she’s not helping with our Summer Camps. She took on the task of organizing 3 herbal recipes for the kids to make for the tea party:

Lavender Lemon Scones
Lemon Balm Cookies
Nettle Cake

All herbal ingredients were harvested from our gardens. They were incredible and the kids loved helping! (With thoroughly washed hands in advance of course.)

Rosie asked us, “do you think you’ll bake with the kids when I’m not here?” To which we all replied in unison, “absolutely not”. 😆 She has a very calm and organized presence in the midst of the chaos of ingredients flying everywhere.

So the tea party was a hit and we were able to watch the plant medicine skits the kids had prepared under the shelter of our gazebo…while the rain poured outside.

What a beautiful day!

The honeybees are loving these poppies that magically self-seeded from last year! We bought ONE from Nancy Graden and now we’ve got a few dozen blooming outside our kitchen window!
