🌱 What Is a Seed Bank—and Why Does It Matter? Think of a seed bank as a living library of plants. Seed banks collect, preserve, and share seeds to help protect plant diversity and ensure valuable varieties aren’t lost. They can play an important role in biodiversity, food security, sustainability, and the future of agriculture. For students, seed saving is also a hands-on way to explore where food comes from and why preserving agricultural resources matters. A single seed may be small, but it holds the potential for an entire future crop. 🌻 Green Jean Foundation is excited to collaborate with Growing Together, the nonprofit founded by Miss University of Florida 2026, Maralee Thompson, to encourage communities to learn more about seeds, growing food, and the importance of agricultural education. 🌱 Be on the lookout for Growing Together/Green Jean Foundation seed banks at your local Farm Bureau! They’re a great way to discover seeds, connect with other growers, and help preserve the plants that can feed our communities in the future. Save a seed. Share a seed. Grow something for the future. 🌱

🌱🐟 How We Give Back: Bringing Aquaponics Into the Classroom

At the Green Jean Foundation, we believe one of the best ways to inspire the next generation is by helping students experience agriculture firsthand.

Through our classroom aquaponics program, students discover how fish, plants, and beneficial bacteria work together in a balanced ecosystem. These tabletop systems create a living laboratory where students can observe science in action while learning about ecosystems, nutrient cycling, habitats, sustainability, and food production.

Aquaponics provides a unique opportunity to connect classroom concepts to real-world applications:�🔬 Science: Students explore life cycles, organism interactions, water quality, and environmental stewardship.�📊 Math: Students collect data, measure growth, analyze trends, and apply problem-solving skills.�📚 ELA: Students strengthen communication skills through observations, research, and scientific writing.

Beyond growing plants, aquaponics helps students understand the connections between our environment, our food systems, and the resources needed to sustain both.

By placing these systems in classrooms, the Green Jean Foundation is helping teachers provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences that encourage curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for agriculture.

🐂🌱 Advocacy starts with showing up!

Our intern Emily is giving us a look at her experience at the National Junior Angus Leadership Conference, where she had the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow as an advocate for agriculture.

We love seeing our interns take what they’ve learned at Green Jean Foundation beyond the classroom and into the agricultural community. From leadership to advocacy, there are so many ways to make an impact in agriculture!

🌱 From an empty space to a growing community garden!
We’re excited to share a look at the progress of our Gainesville community garden at Porter’s Quarters, built in collaboration with Grow Together, founded by our very own Maralee Thompson, Miss University of Florida.

Community gardens are about so much more than growing food. They create hands-on opportunities to learn about agriculture, sustainability, nutrition, and stewardship while providing fresh food for the communities they serve. 🥕🌱

We’re so excited to watch this space grow and see all the learning, connection, and fresh food it will bring to the community!
