Weighing in at 40 tons the massive FIAT 2000 was not only Italy's first tank design but was one of the heaviest tanks of its time. Featuring a turret mounted 65mm mountain gun and a plethora of MGs the design was surprisingly modern for the time when compared to the tanks of their peers.

Rare footage of one of the 2 FIAT 2000s built by Italy during the first world war. These were immense vehicles weighing in at 40 tons and featuring a turret mounted gun, one of the first tanks to do so. It also appears to be one of the first to use a periscope for the driver rather than relying on a direct viewport

Often referred to nowadays as the "cheese wedge" or other nicknames the Stridsvagn 103 (Strv 103) is easily one of the most bizarre main battle tanks of all time.

Rather than carrying a turret the entire hull of the vehicle became the turret using a hydropneumatic suspension system. This allowed the tank to be extremely low profile with the size further being reduced by the use of an autoloader reducing the crew to just 3. Also unique is that any of those 3 crew could fully operate the vehicle by themselves if necessary.

Most remarkably this was not just a concept or prototype reaching production with around 300 being built and seeing service for several decades with the Swedish military.

Continuing with the trend of rare tanks you'd likely overlook is this, the M3 based recovery vehicle.

Designated M31 this was the first American Armored Recovery Vehicle (ARV) followed by the later M4 based ARV

Sadly the contributions the M3 Medium tank and platform made to the war are often overlooked due to its far more successful successor. However this was an extremely important tank for the both the US Army and the British.

Overshadowed by the license built Renault FTs and Mark VIII this funky looking tank is actually the first truly domestic American tank. Known as the Ford 3-ton these would carry a crew of two and a .30 cal machine gun. A large order was initially planned but only 15 were built

Remarkably Ford estimated they could mass produce these at a rate of 100 per day allowing for a huge number to be provided to the troops. However the end of the war and better performance of the French design made these unnecessary

Although typically attributed to the French they were far from the only ones to experiment with oscillating turrets for their tanks. Despite none ever making it past the prototype stage the US tested various designs for different classes of vehicles with this odd looking style of turret
