Hills Garrison’s 4th grade field trip to the State House in Concord, NH was a success! First stop was the Historical Society Museum where the students learned about the Concord Stage Coach and what made it stand out as the best stage coach in the world. Do you know what that is? Why it was the leather straps that allow the coach to rock back and forth instead of bouncing the passengers around of course! The students learned about the golden eagle that used to sit on top of the capital building but because it was made of wood, it began to deteriorate in the weather so a new one was created. The original is now housed in the museum. Other artifacts from peoples of the past were found upstairs and the students moved in amazement around the room as they read plaques with information.
The State House began in the Hall of Flags. A beautiful sight to behold even though the flags were tattered and torn. They students quickly learned the flags were carried out on the battlefield by soldiers who fought to protect and serve. They moved upstairs to the different chambers of the State House and Senate and sat in seats of the representatives and senators that represent them for the state of NH. They were involved in a mock vote over one more hour proposed to each and every school day. As you can imagine, that bill did not pass!
A huge thank you to all involved in making our trip a successful and equally fun experience!
