Look closely at this piece from 1943 depicting The Angelus. By today’s standards, this level of detail is impressive—but when you understand how it was made, it’s downright amazing.

Back in 1943, before the industry had pre-cut computer designs or even standardized rubber stencils, craftsmen used a liquid rubber-like material known as "dope." They would brush it directly onto the raw granite, let it cure, and then hand-cut every single line of the image using an X-Acto knife before sandblasting.

Think about the steady hand and patience required to cut out the folds of the clothing, the wheelbarrow, the clouds, and the delicate lettering for "Now the day is over." One slip of the blade and the whole piece was ruined.

One of the best parts about working in the field is taking a moment to study historic craftsmanship.

Take a close look at this monument—at first glance, you see a traditional band of carved flowers. But zoom in, and you’ll realize no two rosettes are identical.

Beautiful work like this is so easy to take for granted and often goes unappreciated. Today, sandblast-shaped rosettes can be manufactured quickly and easily by comparison. But back when this was made, a carver spent hours shaping every single petal with a chisel, giving each floral accent its own unique life.

I realize that art isn't about being 'better' than another piece; it's about capturing emotion, form, and human spirit. I’ve started a new figurative clay study with a whole new sense of creative freedom. Every subject has a story to tell, and I’m looking forward to exploring where this new direction leads.

Exploring form and surface in Paris.

Earlier this week at Père Lachaise, I came across this striking contemporary monument for the Guibout family. The contrast between the clean, stylized drapery lines and the deeply textured stone surface immediately caught my eye.

That study of surface texture carried straight into today's work:

Morning at Musée Rodin: Analyzing Rodin’s marble works, focusing on how he left raw, unfinished stone textures to give life to smooth forms.

Evening at the Louvre: Working in the sketchbook to break down the rhythms, weight, and classical proportions of The Three Graces (500–30 BC).

Whether looking at ancient Greek bronze/marble or modern stone memorials in Paris, it’s all about how light catches surface and form. Every era leaves its mark.
