WASHINGTON'S THANKSGIVING DAY ADDRESS

signed October 3, 1789, declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God to
obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and
favor; and whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested
me β€œto recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and
prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many favors of
Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form
of government for their safety and happiness.”
Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26 th day of November next, to
be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being
who is the benevolent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may
then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and
protection … And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and
supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our
national and other transgressions; to render our Government a blessing to all the people,
being a Government of wise, just and constitutional laws, to protect and guide all nations
and to bless them with good governments ; to promote the knowledge and practice of true
religion and virtue.

We remember....

As we get ready to celebrate the 16th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we would like to remember some of the heroes of that day. One such hero was Father Mike, the Fireman Chaplin, who gave his life at the site while giving last rites to fireman. Next, Todd Beamer, who was on United Airlines flight number 93, which crashed into the open field in Pennsylvania. He was a Christian and a martial artist. He is the man who led the attack on the hijackers to prevent them from using the airplane is as a missile.
Finally, there was my good friend Al Braca, who was a man deeply committed to the Lord. He was a true man of God. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor of tower one and was nicknamed Reverend Al by his colleagues. Al and his co-workers were trapped with no way to escape that day. There were two reports that came from his co-workers' families that day, that in the last half-hour before the building collapsed, Al had everyone in a big circle holding hands as he led them in prayer. All those who knew AI knew of his commitment to Christ. Even though they referred to him as Reverend, they knew that in a time of trouble, he was there to help. I wonder how many people are in heaven today because of my friend Al and his commitment to Christ.
