The wood is spalted maple burl. Nature did a wonderful job of aging it to shades of brown.

First of many black walnut

I've made a ton of pens over the years with wood people gave me that meant something to them. Like grandparents rocking chairs, table legs and cutting boards.

This board is a piece of black walnut that was harvested and milled at Michigan State College by my grandpa and Dad around 1949. It was one of many picnic tables that were made for the college that year. Each worker got to take one home.
