St. Ann Church-Howardstown

St. Ann Church-Howardstown Small Catholic church and school located in Howardstown, Kentucky The first St. Ann Church was erected between 1862 and 1865 on the site of our present cemetery.

Before there was a Catholic church building in Howardstown, priests would come from neighboring communities and offer the sacraments in family homes. Priests coming from Hodgenville would swim or wade the Rolling Fork River to bring the sacraments to our community. The first school at Howardstown was located near the old church. St. Ann Parish’s first resident pastor, Fr. Engelbert Schmitt, stayed

for 18 years. In 1933 much growth occurred at St. Ann. First, a new three-room school, “St. Ann School,” was built. Since 1933 the current schoolhouse, with a few additions such as electricity and indoor plumbing, has been the educational sight for the children of Howardstown and the surrounding areas. In 1935 our current church was erected. The altar and various statues from the original church building were moved to the new church and are still used today. In 1978, we started our annual picnic, a much beloved tradition in our parish. Year after year many members of some of the original families of Howardstown return to renew old acquaintances, visit with new community members, stroll around the parish grounds, visit the cemetery, and spend their money at the various gaming and food booths. Throughout the years, many changes have taken place within the church building itself and on the parish grounds. The altar rail was removed and stored, only to be unearthed many years later and used as part of the current altar furniture. In 2001 we completely restored our 1930 Wick pipe organ. We also added a 50’ x 14’ pavilion to our garage to accommodate our picnic guests. Two wheelchair ramps have been built: one to allow access into the church and the other access to the church basement, a/k/a our parish hall. Wheelchair accessible restrooms were installed in the parish hall in 2014.
