Here are some reasons why teaching clapping games is AMAZING. These aren't just for fun, they're a fantastic way to develop motor skills, rhythm, bilateral coordination, and social skills too. Time to revisit 'Pat-a-cake' and 'Miss Mary Mack'. Who knew kids' games could pack such a developmental punch?

Emotional regulation is a term that is commonly used now . . . but what does it mean exactly?

My best definition of the term based on my reading, research, and experience supporting autistic children and teens is this:

Emotional regulation is the ability to notice, understand, honor, and address the wide range of emotions that we, as humans, experience.

As human beings, I wonder if any of us truly master emotional regulation.

Honestly, I doubt it!

Yet, I have noticed, and it is documented in research, that autistic people tend to struggle more with emotional regulation - not their fault. Perhaps this comes about for many reasons . . . unfair expectations given autistic neurology, lack of emphasis on and celebration of a child's strengths, a failure to find and embrace opportunities in which autistic people can feel good about themselves.

Ignoring emotions and labeling them as "good" or "bad" has been an approach used for years. But the tide is turning and a more neurodiversity-affirming approach is to accept and explain that all emotions are valid and they arise in different ways for different reasons in our day-to-day lives.

So, what CAN we do to support a child's emotional regulation?

1- Validate emotions

2- Co-regulate and support a child or teen through allowing them the time and space to feel better emotionally, while ensuring the safety of them and those around them.

3- Proactively teach both top-down and bottom-up ways to cope when emotions overwhelm a child

4- Take a long and hard look at the sensory environment and the task demands on a child

How do you support emotions and development of emotional regulation in autistic children and teens?

This tropical wave in the open Atlantic has a 30% chance of development as it moves in to the Caribbean. While I think it's likely the development odds increase in the coming days, it's way too early to speculate on if this becomes a hurricane and/or where it could end up: abc13.com/tropicalupdate
