WEATHER UPDATE ( Sept. 1): KIPP Texas – Houston campuses are open and operating on a normal schedule today. All after-school programs, athletics, and campus activities for Tuesday are canceled.

Our teams are actively monitoring local weather conditions across the Greater Houston area to ensure our KIPPsters, staff, and families remain safe.
-Transportation: Buses are running on schedule. Please expect minor delays during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal due to wet roads.
-Campus Operations: Classes and daily activities are proceeding as normal. All after-school programs, athletics, and campus activities for Tuesday are canceled.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to drive carefully during the morning commute. Should weather conditions change, families will be notified immediately. Stay safe!

📚 IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE REMINDER FOR TEXAS FAMILIES

**Parents and Guardians,**

We want to make Texas school attendance requirements easy to understand and help our families know why **every school day matters.**

🩺 “But I have a doctor’s note.”

A doctor’s note can help explain **why your child was absent** and may allow the absence to be considered excused. However, a doctor’s note does **not automatically remove the missed instructional time** from a student’s attendance record.

Under Texas’ **90% Attendance Rule**, students in grades K–12 generally must attend at least **90% of the days a class is offered** in order to receive credit or a final grade.

What does this mean?

If your child is absent several times because of illness and you provide a doctor’s note each time, the notes document the reason for the absences. However, the missed days still count toward the student’s overall attendance percentage in many circumstances.

Too many absences—whether excused or unexcused—can affect a student’s ability to receive credit or a final grade.

🏫 Being in school matters!

Students learn more than what can be completed through worksheets or makeup assignments. Being present allows students to participate in:

* Teacher instruction and explanations
* Classroom discussions
* Practice and feedback
* Hands-on activities
* Collaboration with classmates
* Daily learning experiences

⚕️ Are there exceptions?

Yes. Texas law provides certain exceptions for specific circumstances, including some qualifying health-care appointments when a student attends school before or after the appointment on the same day. There are also provisions for certain documented serious or life-threatening illnesses.

⭐ The easiest way to remember:

-A note explains the absence.**
-A note does not automatically replace missed instructional time.**
-90% attendance matters.**

Whenever possible, please schedule appointments outside of school hours. If an appointment occurs during the school day, please have your child return to school afterward when they are able.

Every day matters. Every lesson matters. Every minute of instruction counts. ❤️📚
