Table SALT Group is a research-based think tank turning insights into action for small businesses, institutions, and communities.

We’re building legacies rooted in research and story—through policy, education, and economic empowerment.

At Table SALT Group, we think a lot about the word “legacy.”

Not just what we want to leave behind…
but whether we actually know how to protect and sustain what we build.

After several recent conversations with entrepreneurs, families, and community members, one thing became very clear:

Many people desire legacy.
Few people were ever taught how to build it practically.

That realization inspired our newest article and case study focused on:
🏡 heir property
📚 Black Wall Street
🔑 ownership and succession
🤝 community sustainability
📈 and the systems required to protect generational assets

Too often, families inherit land, businesses, and opportunities without inheriting:

structure,
documentation,
succession plans,
or a shared understanding of how to preserve them.

And over time, what was meant to create stability can slowly become vulnerable.

This conversation is deeply connected to the research behind Black to the Future and the work we continue to lead through the LEGACY Framework at Table SALT Group.

Because legacy is bigger than wealth.

Legacy is:

what we teach,
what we protect,
what we organize,
and what can continue working after we are no longer here.

We're excited to share this article because we believe these are conversations more families and communities need to have now — not later.

One of the most meaningful moments for us at the RetieCollection Pop-Up Showcase, hosted by our friends, Ardenna Hardy and Yolanda Shanks was asking people a simple question:

✨ “What does legacy mean to you?” ✨

Almost everyone gave a similar answer:
“To leave something for the next generation.”

Hi I'm Dr. LaRachelle Smith co-founder of Table SALT Group and I have to say, that answer stayed with me.

Because while many of us desire legacy, many of us were never taught how to build it intentionally.

That is one of the reasons I co-authored Black to the Future with Dr. William Turner and why Table SALT Group developed the LEGACY Framework based on the historical lessons of Black Wall Street in Tulsa’s Greenwood District.

Black Wall Street was more than a successful business district. It was an ecosystem built on:
📚 Learning
🔑 Access
💵 Group Economics
📣 Advocacy
🤝 Collective Care
📈 Yield (measurable outcomes)

Legacy is not just about ownership.
It’s about structure.
It’s about sustainability.
It’s about creating systems that continue beyond us.

At Table SALT Group, we help entrepreneurs and organizations think more intentionally about:

what they are building,
how they are building it,
and whether it can truly be sustained and transferred over time.

Seeing community members proudly holding signs that said:
🖤 “I Am Black to the Future LEGACY” 🖤

was a reminder that these conversations matter.

Legacy is not automatic.

It is built through intentional action, shared knowledge, and community-centered strategy.

And that is the work.

Special thanks for my friends from PeopleFund for believing in our work.

What made Black Wall Street powerful was not ownership alone.

It was shared vision.
Shared responsibility.
Shared investment in the future.

That lesson still matters today.

In our latest article, Why Younger Generations Walk Away from Family Legacy — and How to Change That, we explore what it takes to move from inheritance to intentional stewardship.

Through the Black to the Future LEGACY framework, we challenge families and communities to think differently about how legacy is built:

✨ Learning
✨ Equity of Access
✨ Group Economics
✨ Advocacy
✨ Collective Care
✨ Yield

Because legacy is not just about what gets passed down.

It’s about what gets:
• taught
• organized
• practiced
• and sustained across generations

The article also explores:
✔️ the role women often play in preserving continuity
✔️ how communication gaps weaken long-term stability
✔️ why younger generations disengage from legacy conversations
✔️ practical ways families can begin building stronger intergenerational connections now

Who is teaching the next generation how to protect what previous generations worked to build?

Across many families and communities, important conversations about land, ownership, wealth, and responsibility are happening too late—or not at all.

Then crisis happens:

a loved one passes away,
confusion over property begins,
documents are missing,
and younger generations are expected to figure things out without preparation.

In our latest Table SALT Group article, we explore:
✔️ why younger generations often disengage from family legacy conversations
✔️ how heirs’ property and communication gaps create long-term challenges
✔️ the critical role women often play in preserving continuity across generations
✔️ what Black Wall Street teaches us about shared vision and economic participation
✔️ practical ways families can begin engaging younger generations now

One truth stood out clearly:

Legacy is not simply what gets inherited.
It is what gets explained, organized, and intentionally shared.

This is a conversation about more than land or wealth.

It’s about continuity, stewardship, leadership, and preparing future generations to build something that lasts.

What happens when families inherit land… but don’t have a strategy for protecting or using it?

Across the country, many families are holding valuable land that has been passed down for generations. But without clear ownership structures, planning, or coordination, that land can become difficult to manage, vulnerable to loss, and disconnected from real economic opportunity.

We’ve been exploring this issue in a new article:
Why Owning Land Isn’t Enough: How to Turn Property into Generational Wealth

The piece looks at:
✔️ heirs’ property and barriers to wealth-building
✔️ the important role women often play in managing family land and legacy decisions
✔️ lessons from Black Wall Street about ownership, collaboration, and economic strategy
✔️ practical ways families and communities can think differently about land, business, and long-term impact

One idea kept rising to the surface:

Ownership alone doesn’t create legacy.
Strategy does.

If you’ve ever thought about:

family land
generational wealth
community economic growth
or how to turn inherited assets into opportunity

…we hope this article gives you something to think about.
