Nobody told me about the petty staff.
Nobody warned me about the compliant complainers â the ones who smile in your face and work against you the moment you turn around.
Nobody sat me down and said, 'By the way, some of your students will have needs that break your heart â and there will be nothing you can do about it. No matter how early you stay. No matter how hard you work.'
And nobody â not one professor, not one mentor â prepared me for the weight of being led by people who didn't always know what to do, but had the authority to evaluate me anyway.
My Master's program was top notch. And I still wasn't prepared.
If you're a principal right now and you're thinking, 'What is wrong with me?' â I need you to hear this:
Nothing is wrong with you. You are carrying what no one prepared you for.
That's not a personal failure. That's the role.
Save this. Share it with a principal in your circle who needs to feel less alone today.

Can we talk about the Sunday night feeling?
The one that shows up right around 8pm when the break starts to fade and your brain quietly starts building the list.
The emails. The meeting you've been dreading. The staff member you don't know how to handle yet.
All of it â just sitting there. Waiting for Monday.
That feeling has a name. It's real. And if it showed up for you this weekend â you are not alone in it.
Here's what I want you to hold onto today:
You don't have to walk in with everything figured out. You just have to show up â and you already did that.
One foot. One hour. One conversation at a time.
That's the job. And you are built for it.
đ Save this for the next time Sunday night tries to take you out. And share it with a principal who needed to see this today.

Calm leadership is not passive leadership.
It looks like clarity. It sounds like consistency. It protects people and purpose.
Quiet leadership still moves systems.

Most leaders were taught to push through, adapt, and absorb more. But sustainable leadership requires support, structure, and margin.
Both can be true.

Some seasons of leadership are loud.
Others are quieter, slower, and more internal.
Both matter.
Quiet work still counts.

Thereâs the job description.
And then thereâs the job.
The part where youâre constantly visible. The part where every decision feels political. The part where you carry the weight quietly, so others donât feel it.
If youâre overwhelmed, it doesnât mean youâre failing. It means youâre carrying what no one prepared you for.
This is why I created Beyond the Veilâbecause leadership shouldnât require martyrdom.
With steadiness,
Sharon

No one tells principals that urgency can quietly become your personality.
When everything feels immediate, clarity gets crowded out. And over time, leadership starts to feel reactive instead of intentional.
If this feels familiar, you're not alone.

If youâve ever found yourself thinking, âThey didnât teach me this part of the job,â youâre not alone.
Beyond the Veil Consulting exists to support early-career and aspiring principals as they navigate the space between what leadership theory promises and what the role actually requires.
Leadership preparation doesnât always address the pressure, the politics, or the personal balance it takes to lead with both strength and heart. Yet those realities show up every single day on the job.
Thatâs where this work lives.
Our work is organized around focused leadership modules designed to help principals identify blind spots and build practical systemsâprotecting their energy, setting boundaries, and managing people, priorities, and expectations with greater clarity and intention.
Whether youâre a new principal finding your rhythm or an aspiring leader preparing for whatâs next, you belong here.
Thank you for being part of this space.
