Today I was โ€œout the blockโ€ working with one of my favorite international schools with leaders and teachers hailing from eleven countries around the world. Together we focused on all things Social-Emotional Learning inside of effective classrooms. Blessed to do what I do!

"When you're in a position to have gotten so much, the gift at this point is giving back."-Paul Stanley
Every leader is challenged by a problem of practice at the outset of the school year, no matter how long they have sat in the chair as principal. In an effort to GIVE BACK this year, I am hosting complimentary coaching sessions for school leaders who'd like to sound-off on a problem of practice with a thought partner. If you know a school leader pass on this post.

It's that time of year! New school year...new challenges and problems of practice. One of the things I love most about my work is coaching school leaders towards achieving excellent results for black and brown kids in urban, high-poverty schools. In this throwback video I discuss the six fundamentals of great coaching in preparation for a one-month initiative I am launching designed to offer complimentary coaching sessions to school leaders who are new to the space of educational leadership, those at new schools, or those who simply need a thought partner. Who are we if we have nothing to GIVE BACK?

Same WHY....new year. Excited to begin "Chapter 32" in American urban, high-poverty schools.

School administrators juggle many tasks daily. And, as we all know, effective school leadership is only the second in terms of student success. Here are a few tips on how to maximize your efficiency and effectiveness as a school leader & create a smooth, successful educational community.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Prioritize What's Important. Are you actively working to achieve what youโ€™ve set to achieve? Or are you spending time putting out fires and letting the energy of the day drive your productivity? Allow yourself to set times during the day to close your door & focus on what you need to do to help your school succeed.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Feedback & Follow Through. Build time into your observations to complete feedback forms & always schedule a follow-up session to review your feedback with your staff & allow time for processing and reflection. Without concrete, actionable feedback, you wonโ€™t make the most of this important teacher development tool.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Get Organized. Devote some time to setting up effective systems to manage the documents that come across your desk. By organizing your time and providing set hours for certain tasks, youโ€™ll be less likely to waste time and will be more present & effective during each of your commitments.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ GO PAPERLESS!!!!! Reducing/eliminating paper files & forms can free physical space, better preserve confidential information, and save money on expensive supplies like toner, ink, & copy machine repair.

By investing in what matters most and organizing to keep up with your commitments, you can strengthen your leadership practice, model responsibility & focus from the top down. Please like, share & comment on how you stay organized!

HAPPY NATIONAL CLEAN YOUR VIRUTAL DESKTOP DAY!
..
National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day encourages everyone to take time to organize their virtual desktop.

National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day focuses on organizing. So, neaten up your desktop by deleting unneeded items and sorting the rest into folders. Share your tips. For those who are tech-savvy, offer to help others. For example, if Grandma complains that her computer is slow, you owe it to her to help her out. Show her how to keep her computer running smoothly.

Have fun!!!

In honor of National Principals Month, we are sharing our for assistant principals with the desire to become a principal.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸซPlay the hell out of your #2 spot! It requires contentment to accept that others may not know of all the work you do, and sometimes others will give your principal all the credit. Being #2 is hard but it's also a gift!

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸซDefine your core values and stick to them. As the principal you are the leader of your school's culture. Your actions define what is acceptable and unacceptable in the culture. It is your responsibility as principal to directly address any breaches in your culture. What you define as a breach and how you address it is directly informed by your core values.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸซFind your data point. When you are seeking a principalship, folks will want to know how did you move student achievement. You need to find at least one data point to own. Your data point can be a content area, a grade level, attendance data, or suspension data. Just know, you must find something.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸซBuild champions of your leadership. Your first champion must be your principal. When your principal can positively speak about your work and provide details, they are empowered to best advocate on your behalf to their colleagues and their boss (aka potential hiring managers).

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿซ Know your fit. When you are dating you have clear qualities you look for in your partner based upon what you know about yourself. You must have the same awareness about your leadership when seeking a principalship.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐ŸซBe patient. If you receive a "no", ask for specific feedback from the hiring manager. Share the feedback with your principal, and identify an area for you to take on to apply the feedback. Build a habit of frequently affirming yourself so that each time that pesky negative thought creeps up and says "You're not good enough".

As cooler temperatures begin to fall upon us, those of us here in the South are preparing to dust off our famous "gumbo" recipes in an effort to soothe our souls with the magical elixir that only a good GUMBO can provide.

Much like the infamous southern dish, TEAM TEP's customized model is the perfect elixir for our partner schools' work towards sustainable student achievement outcomes. In this short video, Dr. Sheri describes the essence of a good gumbo and TEP's school improvement model.

Many educators have long thought that project-based learning (PBL) focused on the project. However, attention should be focused as much on the process, as the content-related products. From the beginning of PBL in a school, small steps should be encouraged for both teachers and students. Students must learn and practice the process as much as teachers.

Check out these 5 on getting started with PBL:

๐Ÿ““Choose One Product: In the beginning, assign all students one product and preferably the same product. This allows the teacher to practice PBL strategies in a much more controlled classroom. It will also allow the student to focus on one product and start to develop the skills necessary for authentic learning and the process of product development.

๐Ÿ““ Frequently Review Rubric: Students need to become accustomed to using the rubric to guide their work. Taking the time to review the rubric with the students is important, as is frequently reminding students of the rubric and its purpose to guide their work.

๐Ÿ““ Provide Structured Inquiry: Provide students with a structured process to follow. Over time this process can become more inquiry-based and less structured. We must remember that we need to learn how to do things before we can be expected to do them without direction.

๐Ÿ““ Provide Research Resources: Teaching students the research process is important for every school system. Depending on your role and your purpose it may be easier in the beginning to provide students with the research resources they may need. These may be in the form on online multimedia or articles, library-related resources, or from online platforms.

๐Ÿ““ Reflection: This should happen periodically through the PBL process. Encouraging peer feedback in a positive way during the process and as part of a product presentation is powerful. As students learn how to do this they can begin to grow and support each other in meaningful ways.

Starting small can lead to big wins over time. PBL is a very engaging practice but remember much of the process needs to be learned by both the teachers and the students.

Let's be honest.... Most school resource officers (SRO), receive little training prior to starting their new position. Some SROs may have some law enforcement background, but that does not always translate into an educational environment.

After working with numerous SROs across this nation, here are our top 3 on how a school resource officer (SRO) can be successful.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ Develop a professional relationship with the staff. Join the village by building professional relationships with staff by becoming one of them. Start by meeting with the principal and department heads, and request permission to attend staff meetings and trainings. Ask relevant questions to better understand teachersโ€™ vying responsibilities. And most importantly, always welcome feedback!

๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธ Engage students in various environments. Start by being present and highly visible to students throughout the school day. Welcome kids at the crosswalk or front doors. Stand at different locations throughout the school during passing periods. Develop a student recognition program that highlights desired character traits. And even though it sounds cheesy, smile, give high fives, and laugh!!

๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿพ Maintain strong law enforcement relationships. Most SROs work as the only officer in a school making their closest backup officer a patrol officer working a beat. Maintain police training and certifications. If an investigation starts outside of the school and involves your students, lend your resources when appropriate. Bottom line, stay relevant as a law enforcement professional.

If you're a school leader, director, school safety manager or teacher, we would love for you to share your tips below on how to be a successful SRO!
