A man walked past our interview, and the electrician we came to talk to stopped mid-sentence. "That's my guy," he said. "That's how I got where I am today."
We were at Reginald Moore Community Park to tell LaByron's story for the Houston ToolBank. In the middle of his interview, Terrence walked by, and LaByron pointed to him as the mentor who helped him get there.
Terrence had been through so much to reach this day: prison, homelessness, losing his mom and his sister. He got his chance through Career and Recovery Resources' UpRise program and his training at the ToolBank, and today he helps other people rebuild, the same way he helped LaByron.
"That's the best part," Terrence told us. "I was in his shoes."
He was never on our list. Moments like that are why we love this work, and you can see this one when the ToolBank's video premieres September 24th at the Axes & Aces event.
